Arriving back at Fortemps Manor this morning had felt like coming home, every bit as much as the Rising Stones. She had been looking forward to catching up with everyone, until the knight at the door had handed her a formal invitation to dine with Aymeric this evening. Bryony was certain there were a half-dozen rules of Ishgardian etiquette forbidding him from asking her himself, but she had assumed they were past such formality.

She explained the situation to Tataru. "And, so I was hoping you could help me decide what to wear…?"

Her friend's face lit up like her nameday and Starlight had come all at once. Tataru clapped her hands together eagerly. "Yes! Oh, this is so exciting! Gibrillont! I'm taking the rest of the day off!" She turned back to Bryony. "Come on, then! Let's go back to the manor and see what you have for me to work with!"

#FFXIVWrite2026 Day 28! I fell down on posting my prompts last week, but I'm going to try to catch them up over the next couple of days! Skipping ahead to Stormblood MSQ bc I did this quest over the weekend and it was SO good I can't stop thinking about it! links below:

Zenos had caught the Resistance off guard at Rhalgr's Reach; now, with any luck, he would be the one scrambling to defend himself from an unexpected attack. At the very least, she was fairly confident in her ability to keep him distracted long enough for Yugiri to strike from the shadows, if necessary.

And if Bryony remained here and Yugiri perished when she could have helped her, she would never forgive herself. "I'll go after her."

"To bring her back, I hope?" Alisaie asked, raising an eyebrow. "I know you want Zenos dead as much as she does, but do not throw your life away, Bryony! I mean it!" Her voice got louder as she finished, her cheeks flushing with emotion. "Absolutely no noble sacrifices. You have to promise."

Bryony nodded, her voice sincere despite her misgivings. "I promise, Alisaie. We'll be back before you know it."

The younger woman gave her a long, inscrutable look before relenting. "You'd better."

"We must go." The voice that spoke, suddenly close to her, was Estinien's, and accompanied by a mailed hand on her shoulder. Kneeling down, he lifted the visor on his helmet, and his eyes were surprisingly gentle, considering his normally stoic demeanor. "Come, Bryony. Our work is not yet finished." Even in her sorrow, she marveled at his ability to maintain his composure in the face of such trials.

Bryony shook her head. "I know. But I…I cannot leave him." Estinien considered her for a long moment, then turned away and said something she didn't catch to Aymeric, who bowed his head and rose to leave, supported by Lucia as he limped down the stairs.

"You too, Alphinaud." Estinien's tone brooked no argument, though she doubted Alphinaud would have offered him much of one anyway. "Go back to Fortemps Manor and tell the count what transpired here tonight. He needs to know."

"I expected you would volunteer to fight," Aymeric said. "Allow me to preface my next statement by saying I do not doubt your prowess in combat." He hesitated, watching Bryony carefully before continuing. "Still, armed only with your bow against, as you yourself noted, two knights of the Heavens' Ward—what I mean to say is, if you wish, either Lord Haurchefant or I could fight in your stead."

Bryony was only half-listening, her mind shifting focus towards the battle ahead of her. She'd only fought alongside Alphinaud on a handful of occasions. If nothing else, he was a fairly competent healer… Aymeric was looking at her, awaiting a response. "Beg pardon?" A moment later, she processed his offer. "Oh, I wasn't going to duel him with my bow. Can you imagine?" She smiled wryly. "I'll need to borrow a sword. And some proper armor. Mine is gathering rust in Mor Dhona at the moment."

#FFXIVWrite2026 Day 20 is based on my experience of getting lost the second I got to Ishgard, which I gave to Bryony lol :) Using this fic as practice at being more descriptive, since I feel like that's somewhere my writing needs work! Links below!

As Bryony ascended through Ishgard, the streets became wider and less cluttered. The densely packed houses and businesses gave way to increasingly grand estates. At every cross street and corner stood a sentinel, soldiers bearing shields emblazoned with a house's standard. Near the apex of the city, she turned away from the markets and their colorful stalls and headed upwards across a steep bridge. Bryony assumed she was heading in the right direction—more of the guards she passed were carrying the now familiar red unicorn of House Fortemps.

Though it was only mid-afternoon, the sky was beginning to darken, threatening even more snow. Servants scurried out of the mansions, hastily lighting lanterns to ward away the gloom. Bryony pulled her coat tighter around her with a shiver as she noted that the winds, too, had shifted, biting through the layers she wore. At long last, she turned a corner and found herself in the right place.

"Bryony?" Alphinaud's voice was small. When she looked over at him, she saw a young, frightened boy, not the confident commander of the Crystal Braves. "Do…do you think any of the others were able to escape?"

If they had, they would be hard-pressed to find a safe route out of the city. She thought of Minfilia, wresting her hand from Bryony's grasp and running back towards Y'shtola and Thancred, apparently at Hydaelyn's command. Torn between chasing after Minfilia and obeying the Antecedent's command, she had chosen the latter and regretted it since.

"I'm not sure, Alphinaud," she admitted. His face fell, but she tried to be encouraging. "I hope so—surely the Brass Blades would be no match for the Archons."

Yda and Papalymo had been vastly outnumbered, though—and despite Thancred's assurance they would meet again, the grim set of Y'shtola's jaw as she swore to do "that which was required" to secure their survival did not inspire confidence that they would escape unscathed.

Bryony came up short in the entrance of the tower, where G'raha was now standing, blocking the door. "What are you doing?"

His face was resolute, but there was a hint of regret in his now twin scarlet eyes. "I am truly sorry, Bryony. I must do this. You were there in the World of Darkness; you heard what Unei and Doga said. I am the only person left who can control the Crystal Tower—and I believe we were in agreement that it is far too dangerous to leave open, yes?"

Tears burned in her eyes, and she felt like there was something stuck in her throat, making it nearly impossible to speak. She crossed her arms, more out of a desire to keep her emotions under control than an act of defiance. "And so you're going to seal yourself in there? You can't! There has to be another way!"

Thancred shook his head, his long hair falling into his face as he cast his gaze towards the ground. Bryony, not thinking, reached out to brush it back. Before she could, he caught her hand reflexively. Realizing her intent, he relaxed slightly, his grin turning sheepish, but he didn't let go of her hand. Instead his grip shifted, his calloused fingers interlocking with hers as he turned towards the ship, exhaling heavily.

Carvallain was overseeing the loading of the last few bits of cargo into the hold as Lyse and the others looked on. From here, Bryony couldn't hear what Urianger was saying to Alisaie, but she looked slightly confused. Far above them on the deck, she could see members of the crew scurrying back and forth as they too made their final preparations for departure.

The feeling of nervousness she'd been quelling rose again, and she broke the silence between her and Thancred in a rush of words. "It's going to be a long journey. I-I've never travelled this far by sea—or at all—before."

G'raha's eyes brightened, but then he frowned. "Well, I'd certainly like to! But I probably shouldn't—we still haven't made any progress on actually opening the tower. Rammbroes has me poring over every tome I can find, but it's slow going." He sounded crestfallen. "Truly, there's nothing I'd like more than to go with you…"

Bryony reached out and grabbed one of the muffins. Taking a bite, she considered her response. "It sounds to me as though taking a break for one day will make very little difference either way. After all, it's not like the tower is going anywhere, is it?"

He still seemed unsure. "I suppose not. What did you have in mind?" Only after seeing that Bryony had started eating did he take one of the muffins for himself.

Bryony grinned at him. "I'll tell you when we're on the way. Grab your bow and climb on; it's a little bit of a journey."

"Urianger must have told you I've been investigating the primal roar heard during the celebrations of late—and that the aetheric pattern matched records from five years ago, prior to the Calamity."

Bryony nodded. "What do you intend to do about it, then?" The finer points of the discussion had been beyond her ken, she admitted, but one didn't need a Sharlayan education to understand what the repetition of such a pattern could portend.

When Alisaie looked up again, her eyes were bright. "My grandfather invoked the power of the Twelve in an attempt to contain Bahamut's wrath. Alas, he failed and he vanished, together with his foe. I would know the truth of what transpired that day…"

The fervor in her tone was all too familiar to Bryony, for it reminded her of her own single-minded determination to find answers about the devastation the Calamity had wrought in her own life. Five years with no closure, no answers, and a thousand questions…she knew well how that weighed upon a soul.

Her sister huffed. "You know I don't care for all of that nonsense, Bryony. I'm helping Mother and Father run the shop while you go larking off across Eorzea with your Sharlayan friends! At least you were coming home now and again, but now 'the political situation' demands you move halfway across the continent to some godsforsaken wasteland? I've never even heard of Revenant's Toll!" Cecily took a deep breath before continuing. "Do you ever think about how much grief you've caused us?"

Bryony swallowed hard. To be honest, she really hadn't—but she wasn't about to admit that to her already irate sister.
