Shortly after meeting my husband, he asked what I’d like to do for my birthday. I told him I wanted to tag a rail car. We adopted hobo names and wrote our nicknames on an alley wall in sidewalk chalk instead. I’ve always found these fascinating to watch when stopped at a crossing.

My parents were born and raised in central Kentucky. We lived in Mississippi for 8 years - 1st - 8th grade for me. Then a few years in TN before moving to Louisville area when I was 16. I was a bit surprised, because I’ve changed how and what I say a lot, but “ya’ll and “roly poly” got me.

My dialect map says I match 54% with Mississippi.

I’m only a few days away from the 8th anniversary of my mom’s surgery to remove the tumor in her brain. It was a great success, but she still died from it nine months later. This is so promising. Fuck yeah, Science!

🎶 My hollly tree brings all the birds to the yard. About 30 seconds after I stopped this video a bird in another tree gave a signal and at least 30 flew out and moved on. Maybe a warning about our neighborhood hawks or just time for them to move on to the next site of their progressive dinner.

Considering how I feel at the moment, there may be no decking of halls this year. I haven’t even found the oomph to put away the paltry few Halloween decorations I put out. But we have a tradition of making wreaths after Thanksgiving dinner, and I am happy with the result.

Seven years ago today my mother had surgery for a brain tumor. A week later we, unknowingly, celebrated her last birthday with us. Add all this inhumane cruelty and greed that is public policy and I wonder if I’ve experienced my last “good day.” I won’t give in to hopelessness forever, but today?

I started playing Spiritfarer again last weekend. Wanna see a beautiful look into the life of a death doula or hospice worker? This is it. It’s cathartic. If you’re grieving, it may bring up memories and sadness. I’ve cried a few times already, but it’s such a healing journey.
