These findings may help to determine optimal time windows for BCI use in ALS patients based on their spontaneous ongoing brain activity. #neurotech #BCI #ALS #neuroscience

While healthy participants reside in a slightly subcritical regime, ALS patients may reside in a slightly supercritical regime marked by cortical hyperexcitability. This is supported by our effect size trends - however these effects did not reach not statistical significance.

Interestingly, the correlations are inverted for the two groups. Therefore, we propose that ALS patients and healthy participants approach the point of criticality - and optimal BCI performance - from different starting points.

In this work we investigated associations between brain criticality markers from resting-state EEG and subsequent BCI performance in ALS patients and healthy participants. We show that several markers of brain criticality are associated with subsequent BCI performance for both groups.

A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure to present my research at a workshop of the Graz BCI Conference #GBCI2026 organized by @mconstancecorsi.bsky.social and @pierpasorre.bsky.social. 🧠 This work has now been published as a pre-print: doi.org/10.21203/rs.....

In this case we would expect a difference for German speaking philosophers, don't we? :)

This is an interesting thought. Just to be sure I understood you correctly: you assume that philosophers - at least in English speaking countries - do not consider themselves scientists, therefore they do not feel included in "consciousness science"?

Tomko Settgast @settgast.bsky.social · 31/07/2025
That's interesting. I did not know that. Did these groups also have ideas on how to change that? :)

Indeed a good question. To be fair, I think it is just what I heard the most. But I also like that it stresses that it is its own discipline that can include very different viewpoints on the same subject (e.g. not only neuroscience, psychology etc. but also philosophy and more). :)

On my way to #BCI2025 presented by @bcisociety.bsky.social. I will present my work on resting-state brain criticality and subsequent BCI use. If you're interested step by my master class presentation on Monday (16:45-17:45, KC210), my poster on Wednesday, or the workshop W19 on Thursday :)

Oh may I be added? :) I am taking in a rather practical point of view on consciousness research but the detection of neural "signs" consciousness (in forms of mental states) are the most important part of my work :)

I would like to be added :) even though I am coming from a more "applied" point of view, my research is heavily influenced by basic research in neuroscience, and I like to raise its importance in my field :)

Although this is only an initial investigation, the neural correlates found may prove to be useful predictors of BCI use in healthy subjects in the future - an area of research that has been largely neglected for P300-based BCIs.

The increase in brain criticality prior to improved BCI performance is well in line with what would be expected based on theory and supports our hypothesis of its potential relevance for BCI use that we made earlier this year: www.researchgate.net/publication/...

I made this Pride flag using only NASA images and our team thought it would be cool to share on social (I work on the NASA heliophysics communications team), but it's getting all sorts of hate on the bird app and Fbook. Thought y'all might be more appreciative of it here. ☺️🏳️‍🌈💖
A pride flag with every color band represented by a NASA image. White is Earth clouds, pink is aurora, blue is the Sun in a specific wavelength, brown is Jupiter clouds, black is the Hubble deep field, red is the top of sprites, orange is a Mars crater, yellow is the surface of Io, green is a lake with algae, blue is Neptune, and purple is the Crab Nebula in a specific wavelength.

We came up with this idea seeing correlations between two proxy measures for brain criticality - Lempel-Ziv complexity and the 1/f EEG component - and BCI performance in one of our patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and conducted a little review here to underpin our idea.

Interesting for scientists investigating meditation in German speaking populations: We translated the meditation-related adverse effect scale - mindfulness-based program version (Britton et al., 2018) into German using a TRAPD team approach. The scale can be accessed here: osf.io/k6d9y/ . Have fun!
