I'm hoping this will lead to a massive Streisand Effect for @sethrockman.bsky.social (who wrote Scraping By).
Pehl, the history professor, told me that he did just that, and decided not to use the book Scraping By, about labor in Revolutionary-era Baltimore, because he had been planning on teaching it early in the year, which didn’t allow time for it to be reviewed first. The book differentiates between the experiences of workers based on whether they were enslaved or free, men or women.

It's not so much that we need to be afraid of AI itself, it's that we are afraid of what most *men* want to do with it -- to us.

I am going to guess, yes. So much of the "intellectual diversity" project hinges on monetizing participation of students and faculty alike-- another one of those "accusations = confession" element of the attack on a fictitious "academic left".

Exactly, Paul! In the spirit of "Could you imagine if Obama did this?" And all the things the academic left is accused of doing... and actually doesn't do... And then the right does it shamelessly and blatantly.

I too have sometimes thought that a wall chart of this nature would be a useful addition to any History classroom.
A wall chart in a classroom explaining that the 1800s are the 19th century, and so forth

Chapter 4 of @sethrockman.bsky.social's Plantation Goods, "Wage Slaves", is not bad reading for Labor Day, if you want to reflect on some things. Here's the end of the chapter, with a highlight because it made me think about our current supply chains, too. press.uchicago.edu/ucp/books/bo...
In retrospect, the severing of work from questions of faith, partisanship, and ethics could have held some allure for workers fabricating tools, shoes, and clothing for the plantation economy. To follow their handiwork to its destination might have raised questions no one wanted to answer. Little evidence suggests that factory workers saw themselves as “complicit” in bondage, let alone as the beneficiaries of slavery. Their failure to make those connections puts them in the company of almost everyone in history whose livelihood has depended on long-distance economic exchange. But few New England workers would have understood their labor as wholly amoral, apolitical, or irreligious. Work could never be that—a point that the laboring men and women of the plantation goods economy made repeatedly as they contested the vast disparities of power between themselves and their employers. By insisting on the compatibility of wage work and republican citizenship, laboring people made sure that political, religious, and moral questions would not recede from view.

It is weird how in other societies there is a recognition that people at airports need luggage carts and that such things should be provided by the airport; and that people can be incentivized to return them when done via a small deposit

Agree that within "normal" paradigms of how to build a faculty, this configuration of scholars does not compute... but for the ideological project undergirded the endeavor. This is especially significant for understanding the job market in early modern European history.

The right wing dream is to create civic thought programs at universities around the country to hire humanities PhDs, like the Hamilton Center, but they have to be able to control the production, which they can’t do w/o grad students. Meanwhile, normal, research-driven grad students can’t get jobs.

Presumably this is doing no favors for the scholars involved: they'll always wonder if they "actually" belong, undermining their self-esteem and making them vulnerable to accusations of being "diversity hires."

The conflict between AI and accommodations is *the* pedagogical issue of the moment. But there's no real leadership on this. It's all delegated to faculty to work out on their own, with occasional assists (or resistance) from disability offices. It's untenable, terrible for both students + faculty.
