Consumers go into survival mode, tightening the belt as far as they can. Families dip into savings. The Vibe-cession becomes a Vibe-pression as people get more and more pessimistic about the economy. Tax revenue falls across the board, businesses go under, new businesses don't replace them.

People buy less stuff. Businesses make less money, so businesses produce less stuff. Businesses need/can afford to pay fewer people, so more people get laid off. Those newly unemployed people can't find jobs because businesses aren't hiring and there's a sudden glut of job-seekers.

So, if you fire tens of thousands of workers, and sow fear among hundreds of thousands more, that would tend to depress demand. And if you slap tariffs on consumer goods, like food and fuel, they get more expensive. People still buy them, but they've got less money left over to buy other stuff.
