Good writing isn't about removing complexity, especially if it's a complex topic. It's about removing unnecessary jargon. ❌ "Light undergoes refraction as it traverses media with different indices of refraction." ✅ "Light bends when it moves from one material, like air, into another, like water."
White text on a golden-yellow background: "Quick Writing Tip: If a smart friend outside your field would get lost, that's a sign to translate, not simplify." The Seshat Editing logo and "seshatediting.carrd.co" sit at the bottom.

Instead of naming the emotion, try to describe what's happening in the body or the scene. ❌ "He was anxious over the email." ✅ "His coffee went cold while trembling hands rewrote the email for the fourth time." Specific details carry emotional weight!
White text on a golden-yellow background: "Quick Writing Tip: Naming the physical detail that causes an emotion often lands harder than naming the emotion itself." The Seshat Editing logo and "seshatediting.carrd.co" sit at the bottom.

One editing question worth asking: "Could our biggest competitor yoink and publish this unchanged?" If the answer is yes, that's usually a sign to add specifics that reflect how you see the world.
White text on a golden-yellow background: "If a blog post could've come from any competitor, that's a chance to get more specific to your brand." The Seshat Editing logo and "seshatediting.carrd.co" sit at the bottom.

Contrary to popular belief, passive voice is a tool, not a flaw! The key question is whether it serves the reader or simply avoids naming who's doing the action.
White text on a golden-yellow background: "Quick Writing Tip: Passive voice has its place. Just check whether it's hiding who's actually doing the acting." The Seshat Editing logo and "seshatediting.carrd.co" sit at the bottom.

Booo being responsible sometimes #booksky
When you want to buy every book on your wish list, but remember you’re an adult with bills to pay. I don’t like it. It’s too much responsibility.

Just finished the first of the Finlay Donovan series! I can't WAIT to get to book 2, but all of the books I had on hold in Libby decided to become available at once LOL

I am a certified #TEFL teacher, but unable to teach now. I LOVE everything about language learning, though, so I'm creating a series of learning materials for adults that other #ESL teachers might find useful for first-time or last-minute lessons. More to come in time 💛 www.etsy.com/shop/RoyalAz...

A paragraph that looks manageable gets read. A paragraph that looks exhausting gets postponed. 🗣️📢Shorter paragraphs are less about style and more about courtesy to both the person on a smaller screen and the person who lives with a processing disorder!

This is fore-edge painting: a scene hidden in a book's gilded edge, invisible until you fan the pages just right. Here it meets Tolkien's Lord of the Rings.

Libraries make us a harder target for authoritarianism. Equal access to info, ideas, and space that doesn’t require a purchase to belong. Also: using the library means money stays in your community instead of streaming out to Amazon. 📚 What’s checked out on your card right now?

Not to say that *every* "in order to" is wrong. Be concise, but be smart! Nuance is just as important as that quick scan 🧐
"Quick Writing Tip" and "'In order to' almost always works fine as just 'to.' It's worth a scan before you submit." in white text over a dark golden yellow background. The Seshat Editing logo and "seshatediting.carrd.co" sit at the bottom.

I don’t laugh when I see those news articles about how 32/35 students failed an exam for using AI. That makes me so sad. An entire generation who largely does not value learning. That’s not funny, that’s an indictment on society and people should be ashamed of themselves.

Frame your call to action as an opportunity or next step, not a command. Your audience will be more likely to engage with confidence. #WritingTips #AcademicEditing #BusinessEditing
