Assetto Corsa EVO update. No gating of cars or circuits is a shot at games like Forza Horizon and Gran Turismo. Part of rally's attraction for me is they take place on all kinds of roads and conditions and EVO's free roam sounds philosophically similar. www.youtube.com/watch?v=kKrW...

2/2 Some people can use regular game controllers just fine but RC controllers have sticks that have very light spring forces much like the controls found in many helicopter and gliders. These controllers are also usable for traditional powered fixed-wing sims.

1/2 RC or FPV controllers with USB port that supports simulators are effective and affordable alternative for learning to fly helicopters and gliders in sims. The catch is checking if shorter batteries without protected circuitry are needed.

18/18 Finally if all of this inspires learning air combat for real then there’s no better place to start then Robert L. Shaw’s Fighter Combat: Tactics and Maneuvering. This post-graduate level look at dogfights that is still relevant in today’s world.

17/18 China’s Sky Hunter (2017) felt like it was made by old people, just terrible. Avoid. Born to Fly (2023) was much more watchable and I had some fun seeing things from the other side.

16/18 French Les Chevaliers du ciel or Sky Fighters (2005) was a bit derivative but had incredible shots of the Mirage 2000 and the Alpha Jet.

15/18 Fire Birds (1990) had great actors and nice helicopter-on-helicopter-on-fast movers dogfights. The characters were insufferably annoying. Seriously. Flip a coin on this one.

14/18 Everyone has seen Top Gun but for those who haven’t the first had better music and opening sequence but the second movie was better a one in every other way. Both are classics. Other movies that deserve some mention:

13/18 Area 88 (2004) makes a return with cell-shaded art-style, new characters, and new aircraft. While still anti-war like its predecessor it’s a much lighter take.

9/18 There are many Gundam series that are considered better (War in the Pocket, Iron-Blooded Orphan, MSG 00, etc.) But with lots of dogfights, colony drop, and super weapons Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory (1991) wasn’t called Top Gun Gundam for nothing.

6/18 Iron Eagle (1986) was the Air Force’s (and IAF) messy answer to Top Gun in 1986 that never caught on. Infinite ammo like Ace Combat, Hades, music video-like sequences, and high school anime concept makes for a guilty watch.

5/18 Area 88 (1985) is a three part OVA about indentured mercenary pilots. Don’t be fooled by the 80s music or the appearance of the awesome F-20 Tigershark, this is easily the most anti-war of the bunch with cockpits and lives shown ripped apart.

9/11 I asked what was the point of my work. He literally shrugged. I shrugged back and told him to never use the computer for financial transactions, email, or anything that requires passwords. Computer went back to a crawl after my visit. Parents are now on phones and iPads.

SerMeow @sermeow.bsky.social · 15/09/2026

8/11 Bonus: spent a few hours reinstalling Windows and software because malware was locking up the PC. Took a shower and came out to see my dad re-installing malware. I pointed that out and he said that he understands but he wants his free movies.

SerMeow @sermeow.bsky.social · 15/09/2026

7/11 I told my dad to get the board replaced by a US-spec one which I included the link for the tech to order from. He said he could live with it meaning either he was too embarrassed or couldn't negotiate with the tech. My mom who listens to the radio constantly couldn't though.

100

SerMeow @sermeow.bsky.social · 15/09/2026

6/11 I thought the tech was either an idiot or a scammer. I did a one minute search on Amazon and found the board for the same price as AliExpress but my dad shrugged. Later it turned out the board is spec to China's interference standards and jams US AM/FM radio frequencies.

5/11 Parents said they threw the original computer away and prefer keeping the Dell because it's cheaper and they value gifts from relatives, or rather from some relatives anyway. Dad told me the motherboard was going to take a few weeks from China. Wat?

100

SerMeow @sermeow.bsky.social · 15/09/2026

4/11 Kids couldn't figure it out but a professional repair tech concur what I said which was that the bespoke motherboard needs replacement. I said this is the perfect time leave Dell and go a back to industry standard components for cheaper future upgrades.

100

SerMeow @sermeow.bsky.social · 15/09/2026

3/11 Eventually the computer fail to boot from getting pounded like a drug lab door by Robocop. It was replaced by a Dell donated by a relative, and when it failed my parents thought my motherboard diagnosis was wrong and said that they seen kids repair PCs so they'll ask them.

SerMeow @sermeow.bsky.social · 15/09/2026

2/11 I caught my dad loudly smacking the $1500 computer I gifted him. Explained that modern tech is not like CRT and vac tubes and hits can create microfractures of tiny electrical traces. Showed him it was loose cable connections. He continued to hit it.

SerMeow @sermeow.bsky.social · 15/09/2026

1/11 I knew many techs that lack people skills and mistake their interests as the client's or are argumentative, haughty, or trying to impress. I have no idea if this is the case here (poster's name and title doesn't help) but here's me with my parents.
