Golden West Cafe in Baltimore used to serve these fried tofu puffs that were so light and airy. They were slathered in buffalo sauce and served with vegan ranch dip. I have yet to find anything that comes close, the texture was so specific. Like spicy tofu clouds.

And I’m not even gonna get started on the actual textile production. We grow SOME cotton here in the US but that doesn’t mean it’s processed here. It may be spun and knit in Turkey. So even if we grow it ourselves, it still has to go overseas at some point.

So like, we don’t even have a labor force who would be able to work these jobs. And they famously do not pay well. Which, frankly, is probably the point of all this. Someone working 10 hours a day for $15 an hour (if that) has very little leverage to protest or strike.

Second, making clothes is SKILLED labor. How many people do you know who actually sew? Like at a level where they could mass produce things? I have this skill and even I don’t want to have a job doing this (and now I work in corporate America). It’s physically demanding and sometimes dangerous.

First of all, we simply do not have a lot of the equipment required. One of the reasons why China has such good quality manufacturing is they literally have the right machines for it. I used to work for a big clothing company and we had a project where we had to bring in machines from Italy.
