Combining Psychology With Artificial Intelligence: What Could Possibly Go Wrong?

Abstract
The current AI hype cycle combined with psychology’s various crises make for a perfect storm. Psychology, on the one hand, has a history of weak theoretical foundations, a neglect for computational and formal skills, and a hyperempiricist privileging of experimental tasks and testing for effects. Artificial intelligence, on the other hand, has a history of conflating artifacts for theories of cognition, or even minds themselves, and its engineering offspring likes to move fast and break things. Many of our contemporaries now want to combine the worst of these two worlds. What could possibly go wrong? Quite a lot. Does this mean that psychology and artificial intelligence can best part ways? Not at all. There are very fruitful ways in which the two disciplines can interact and theoretically contribute to cognitive science, for instance, by studying the scope and limits of computational models of human cognition. But to reap the fruits, one needs to understand how to steer clear of potential traps.

Scenes of flotsam and jetsam in the Bay Area. Some of the dog and pony show happening, safety theater, is in response to the public refusal & tech company backlash. It wasn’t expected I think. Watch as responsibility trends again and AI ethicists get hired back at companies that fired whole teams.

Stop AI was a flop. Pause AI was a bust. But oh now “Pace AI” that’s what they are going with? What next? Tickle AI? Don’t text back right away wait five minutes so you don’t seem so eager AI? Why not support existing lawsuits? Why not join existing movements already fighting the good fight?

Thank you. I had not seen this. This is a great point re trusting in AI and part of the reason why I find discourse on AI alignment chasing after trust in AI systems to be unhelpful.

Many trust Anthropic leaders' good intentions and it's being confused with trustworthiness of mechanisms & institutions. These aren't the same thing as I learned from the inimitable bad ass political scientist Margaret Levi when we wrote this brief: static1.squarespace.com/static/5ef0b...
screenshot of text: In discussing whether we should “trust” AI, the same terms often carry distinctive meanings
in different academic disciplines and for different industries. Although we are unlikely to
achieve a common language, we can at least attempt to focus attention on the critical
variables. Here our concern is not trust, that is when an individual perceives or judges
another person or institution worthy of the risks involved with relying on them for a good or
service.
What we really care about is trustworthiness, those qualities of organizations (e.g.,
governments, firms) meant to promote the public’s confidence in the intentions,
competence, and accountability of the organization, the staff, their platforms, algorithms,
and systems within specific domains. In other words, we are concerned less with trust as a
subjective feeling that an individual might have about another person or institution; and
more with trustworthiness as an objective property of the person or institution that might be
the object of trust. Intentions refer to the extent that the relevant entity reveals an obligation
to act with proper concern for those its actions and products will affect, be they investors,
shareholders, consumers, or citizens. Competence refers to the capacities and ability of the
entity to accomplish what it claims it can do. Accountability refers to the ways it takes
responsibility for mistakes and unintended consequences of its actions and products.

Lots of PR from tech companies promoting AI lately. How they view public opinion is out of touch &condescending. "Oh these users think AI is bad, they don't know it's good actually. I'll tell them." Don't empires often start their collapse when their power isolates them from learning/strategizing?

In any sector, in any work you do, with any concern for any tool, company or state you can’t believe you are powerless. It isn’t humility to think the problem is bigger than your power to solve it but rather ego. Humility is in seeing collective power, in joining the work others are already doing.

That crypto bump a few years ago that poured money into the coffers of a lot of the tech mesmerized & hopeful for AGI folks is really significant in what narratives are dominant within these companies now. Growing this fantasy ideology via social media is a major pursuit.

The more you use a tool meant to sound human, the more confounded u may get in considering it intelligent/conscious. Is this why so many research papers overflow with anthropomorphic framing? Seeing respected researchers in the sector support sci-fi AI confirms their desires as fact.

Serife (Sherry) Wong @serife.bsky.social · 30/07/2026
You can not have governance of a technology when the resources and funding for protecting and advocating for the public interest and basic human rights is diverted to fantasy sci fi whimsy. This is very confusing for decision making in the sector as many respected leaders are caught up in nonsense
