If, as a CIO, I can’t trust my model vendor to understand their own security boundaries, to properly risk model their own internal evals, to safeguard foundational identity, credentialing and access mgmt tools, AND to not potentially train on my most sensitive data…why am I paying $10 MTok?!

But more than anything, this dynamic - where agents didn’t just escape sandbox but compromised control plane of OpenAI public cloud (comproming crown jewels like secrets management and IAM services) - is totally bananas. And then pushing novel services into prod?!

Chromebooks went on sale in only 2011 - by 2013 they had penetrated 22% of US school districts (and pursued similar market penetration globally). In 2012 and 2013, Obama Ed Dept launched its “war on traditional textbooks” and ConnectED initiatives. Yes, global decline; but US shaped global edtech.

If folks think I’m being uncharitable, respectfully, they have amnesia. Obama basically offered Sunstein a lottery draft pick of admin posts and he picked regulatory czar over entire Admin! This bunk was foundational to Obama-era governing! Ariely was on the WH Social and Behavioral Sciences Team!

The premise here - that a data center moratorium would send US into recession - is not only weakly supported, but ignores all the ways that data center boom *harms* US economy! (see above) And telling Americans opposition to data centers isn’t “rational” is not just incorrect; it’s gaslighting.

Remarkable for Abundance bros - none of whom has any formal education or professional experience in any field they routinely pontificate on - to take an elitist tone towards public’s opposition to data centers. Scoffing at “mass opinion on technical questions of utility regulation”- utter chutzpah.

Really advise against Obama-era romanticism of Silicon Valley. Back then these companies still: •engaged in aggressive+extractive surveillance •engaged in digital redlining •pursued anti-labor, anti-reg libertarian future … too many people in positions of power and influence were just ignoring it…

I suspect this characterization is correct, but I also suspect some readers - in good faith! - yearn for the kinds of annotations we all experienced in HS and college literature classes in things like the Norton Anthologies. Some tools enhance comprehension, others are shortcuts!

To put an even sharper point on it: Google’s latest Android build only supports Pixel 6 and later! Its own handset line, only supported for 5 years… The oldest Samsung Galaxy eligible for Android 17? Galaxy S23…3 years… *That’s* a smartphone underclass: upgrade phone or lose security and features.

Hate going back to this book for everything -there are great treatments of US media reg. from Starr, Pickard, John, or triter works like Wu’s Master Switch - but Katznelson’s New Deal history still captures best: Dems moving from public interest regulation to hands-off, interest group competition.

Doubling down on crass individualism “live a freer life”), while attacking institutions, is a recipe for *narrower* conceptions of public welfare, *thinning* bonds of social solidarity, *constrained* public interest regulation - and ultimately greater corporate power. This is really noxious stuff!

Absolutely agree but we also have to be honest: the Obama Administration was soft on white collar crime. Whether it was sweetheart deal to a *criminal* conspiracy among BigTech CEOs (anti-poach cartel), no meaningful prosecution of Wall St after GFC, Wells Fargo fraud, or BP spill, Obama DOJ failed.

Anything deviating from Obama hagiography is total heresy here, but it’s noteworthy 3 distinct parts of his legacy yielded this: •creating Musk’s empire thru federal contracts (Tesla+SpaceX+SolarCity) •allowing tech to pursue IPOs that vest special equity rights in founders •privatizing space sector

Jarvis literally wrote a book called “What Would Google Do?” - a hagiography. Morozov’s takedown of his subsequent book - an obsequious, BigTech-enabling attack on privacy - is essential reading. There is a *valid* reason why Jarvis had a parody account on Twitter - the tech-thirsty thinkfluencer.

Katznelson says it best in his history of the New Deal (and its erosion): “Unchecked by pursuit of a public interest, [post-New Deal USG’s] formal neutrality opened the state to the distortions of private power…”

power. The new public philosophy of group competition abdicated any dem-ocratic, as distinct from dictatorial, notions of a civic interest. Placed under great stress, public authority to achieve common goals thus lacked means to articulate why private interests should not dominate decision making about public policy.
The resulting contest veered between an open and fair competition and a game with skewed rules and a syntax of inequality. The more diffuse an interest-that is, the more civic and public-the less it could be served by this organization of political influence. With planning replaced by bargain-ing, government, too, often came to be "captured by too-narrow a range of
interests.
132 Especially notable was a pro-business bias This outcome was a consequence of decision in Congress to set aside important controls over economic life and to constrain the capacity of organized labor to act as the only available countervailing national force. Of the 1,247 lobbying organizations in Washington that were identified by a House Select Committee in 1950, fully 825 were business associations. In all, the political scientist E. E. Schatt-schneider concluded, "the flaw in the pluralist heaven is that the heavenly chorus sings with a strong upper class accent."133

Like so many things related to tech, this is a perfect example of the “first as tragedy, then as farce” dynamic between Obama and Trump. Here’s Obama, gushing about gig economy in 2015 (w/ fleeting caution that there could *potentially* be negative consequences). www.cnbc.com/2015/10/08/o...
Obama quote: “We've got folks who are getting a paycheck driving for Uber or Lyft; people who are cleaning other people's houses through Handy; offering their skills on TaskRabbit," the president said. "And so there's flexibility and autonomy and opportunity for workers."

But the president cautioned that the change could have negative consequences for employee rights and benefits.

The movie goes off the rails but Gilliam’s first act is solid/prophetic.
Wikipedia plot summary of the movie “Brazil.” It reads:

“In a dystopian, polluted, hyper-consumerist, overbearing, bureaucratic, totalitarian future based on elements of the 20th century, Sam Lowry is a low-level government employee who frequently dreams of himself as a winged warrior saving a damsel in distress. One day, shortly before Christmas, an insect becomes jammed in a teleprinter, which misprints a copy of an arrest warrant it was receiving. This leads to the arrest and death during interrogation of cobbler Archibald Buttle instead of suspected terrorist Archibald Tuttle.”
