A company may own the world’s best GPUs. If the grid operator cannot provide the required capacity, those GPUs cannot create economic value. AI leadership will depend on the ability to convert reliable electricity into computing power at scale.

US data centers consumed approximately 4.4% of national electricity in 2023. The projected share for 2028 is 6.7–12%. The challenge is not merely generating energy. It is delivering enough power at the right location, continuously and affordably.

The US Department of Energy reports hyperscale data center connection requests reaching 300–1,000 MW. One facility can approach the electricity demand of a medium-sized city. These are no longer ordinary data centers. They are energy-intensive industrial plants.

The units matter: MW measures the power capacity a facility needs at a given moment. MWh measures the energy it consumes over time. Money may launch an AI project. But access to reliable MW determines how far and how fast it can scale.
