Mind-blowing story in Private Eye about how the Telegraph's chief reporter reached out to James Orr (or meant to) after the Channel 4 donation revelations

...within hours of journalists on either the *Guardian* or *Sunday Times* contacting Reform for comment on the same stories ahead of them publishing their own investigations. Reform deputy leader Richard Tice and his fiancée, supposed journalist Isabel Oakeshott, even crowed online about their spoiler tactics.

Not that the *Telegraph* doesn't do its own leg work when reporting on Reform. After James Orr, the party's head of policy, had to resign after a sting by *Channel 4 News* (see "*Right Orr Wrong*, p14"), *Telegraph* chief reporter Rob Mendick texted Orr: "I was hoping to talk to you entirely on background," he schmoozed. "You must be feeling very bruised and I totally Appreciate [sic] the sensitivities. I suspect you deserve better and I wanted to see how I can put the record straight in some way." Alas, instead of the Reformer and Cambridge theologian, Mendick messaged someone else, who shared it with the *Eye*!

Calling him "the opposition" is a bit of a stretch. He came last in every seat he contested after starting his fascist party. It's just weird how little these American extremists know about Britain compared to how much they talk about it.

Buying my first suit for prom, I asked the staff at the chain suit store if they had anything that was easier to move in. They brushed it off as that's how suits should fit and only bad suits would be that moveable Now realise how little they knew and were caught up in the 2010s skinny suit trend

being so fr when I say that transmisogyny has put feminism back like 50 years

what i thought we had distanced ourselves from was the reduction of women to vaginas and wombs and the ability to bear children. i thought we had progressed past 'dresses are for women and pants are for men. i thought we progressed past the idea that someone is less of a woman if she does not adhere strictly to beauty standards. i thought we progressed past the idea that naturally being comfortable adhering to highly feminine standards is vulgar. but i (sarcastically) guess no one could have predicted that trans-exclusive feminism would be the downfall of all the progress we've made

How can big cities be melting pots of people from outside can't move there. Were the many different generations of immigrants who moved there transplants? What about someone moving away from a homophobic/transphobic/racist community who wants to just be themselves in an inclusive city?

It's the same as labours approach to hero voters Surely politics and news is about educating people and changing opinions. If not then what's the point? If it's just pandering to where people are at, then why have news, debates or parliamentary process at all. Just do policy by vox pop and poll

Do we know how this change is being reflected across the age range? Is the premium dropping across the board or is it a wave starting in the younger ages which could signal a bigger drop as recent graduates progress in their careers and previous generations retire?

Our country is on fire and the government needs to shout about it with the same urgency as the far right did when they said our country was at breaking point with immigration. Make reform campaign in the Black Country and tell people that wildfires within a few miles of their houses isn't a problem

This seems more ok because free bus passes feels like a national policy, though should be advertised as English. The issue will be whether the government will be ok letter councils fail and live with the consequences of their decisions. With great devolved powers comes great responsibility

I'm from a working class family and my mom couldn't afford to drive. Not policing speeding, doesn't help the working class, it means more get hit by cars. Rich people being able to pay fines, doesn't mean poorer people should be off the hook for crappy behaviour. Speeding is such a needless crime

That logic is scary. It justifies removing empathy from Amy of the outgroup and can be used to justify anything. It's bad on its own but from a selfish perspective for those holding it, the in and out group can easily change like in the French revolution or Maoist China.

Dude this isn't America where you sue whenever you have a problem. Any issues like that can be investigated and resolved internally without a lawsuit. Poor marking and teaching is something universities will have a lot of experience with. It's an issue, but not a massive industry breaking one.

This should be self evident but clearly isn’t. From @lewisgoodall.com
The problem is not that higher education has failed as an engine of social mobility. It is that, for too long, it has been treated as the only engine. The curriculum is not the problem which is driving our NEET malaise; the weakness of local economies is. Any Labour administration should therefore tread very carefully before dismantling any part of the comprehensive educational settlement created by the Labour governments of the 1960s. Burnham's proposals also misunderstand the multi-layered nature of the modern university, which in many cases is as likely to offer vocational courses as strictly academic ones.
In any case, let's stop the obsession with STEM subjects and
"practical" training. There is already too much snobbery in the assumption that working-class students are somehow less interested in the arts and humanities. And we've never needed those graduates more. In an age in which we are already outsourcing so much of our critical thinking to machines, and in which none of us can be entirely sure of the truth of what we see, where the world's complexity is ever deepening, subjects like philosophy, history, political science, linguistics, classics and literature have rarely been more important.
I'm sure our English graduate prime minister might agree.

The graduate premium (money people will earn from going to uni) is greater for disadvantaged pupils yet everyone acts like it's the opposite. Uni isn't for everyone but I'm afraid that young working class students who would benefit from it will be turned off by these policies and language.

Tens of thousands of people have marched through the capital for this year's
 London Trans+ Pride event.
The march began at 13:00 BST near BBC Broadcasting House, at Langham
Place, and headed to Trafalgar Square.
London Trans+ Pride described the political backdrop to this year's march as
"stark", following new guidance from the Equalities and Human Rights
Commission (EHRC), which states that single-sex spaces must be used on the
 basis of biological sex.
The BBC has asked organisers for the number of people in attendance. The
Metropolitan Police said it did not have that data.
