Crowley’s heart broke. “There are rude and cruel people like Mr. Jaekay out there and I’m not going to pretend they don't exist. Because I want you to be safe.”

“That's what my mum said.” Toby picked up a stuffed duck Tartan had won at a funfair and hugged it.

“Your mum is so wonderful and I am glad she supports you.” He took a breath. “While those nasty people exist, so do the good ones. Mr. Fell and I found a wonderful group of friends when I was pregnant with Tartan. They were similar to us. There are people out there who will support us, care for us, and even fight for us. It's not always easy, but I want you to know that you always have your mum, you always have Tartan , and you always have me and Mr. Fell and our family. We’ll always have your back, yeah? You’re safe with us.”

Toby nodded their head. “Thank you.” They looked around the room. “Tartan is my best friend. I’m sorry if she got in a lot of trouble today.”

“Toby, neither of you did anything wrong today. Tartan is not in any trouble. We made sure of that with your school and she is definitely not in trouble with us.”

Toby kept their eyes down and circled a finger around the little plastic eye on the duck. “Can I have a hug?”

“Of course.” Crowley was plenty used to hugging Tartan’s friends by now, but this one contained many layers of importance.

“I’ve already talked to your mum about this, Toby, but…if you ever need to talk about everything you’re going through with your gender, you can come to me and Mr. Fell.”

Toby hugged him tighter. “Thank you.”

Crowley sat in the clover and looked up. The sky was now shimmering with its innumerable stars. He thought of himself as The Starmaker, how his hands and voice called forth light and brought much of this into existence. He was a midwife to Creation then. His role and angelic identity had been stripped from him and he nearly didn’t survive the process, but here he was, in a field, looking up at his own stars, with his cottage not too far away, sheltering his husband, daughter, and unborn child. Safely. With Aziraphale, he created life. His hands still guided creation through his comfort and skill. His voice still brought forth light, providing knowledge and reassurance. He was still The Starmaker. He’d survived, healed, and gave himself a name. Throughout time, he presented to humans in many forms, but the heart of him and his identity remained mostly unchanged. Midwifery was part of that, an aspect to himself borne from his own tenacity and used to protect not only himself, but humankind. Crowley was a midwife in ways that went beyond laying hands on bellies and guiding babies to this world. Deep down, he had nurtured himself and kept a spark of hope tucked away until it grew and could be brought forth, allowing him to be fully himself.

Aziraphale pushed the door to the patio at Marguerite’s, ready to give Mr. Brown a piece of his mind but instead of the carpet seller he found Crowley staring at him, looking bewildered.
“Crowley?! What are you doing here? I thought this was the shopkeeper meeting,” Aziraphale said, slightly confused. “And why are you wearing this ridiculous disguise?!”
Crowley looked helplessly around the patio - it seems they were the only ones present - then at himself, he was wearing a garish jumper and teal corduroy trousers. With a snap of his fingers, his “intern” disguise fell away to reveal his usual black outfit.
“Beat me, I was supposed to be meeting a group of humans here about-” he interrupted himself.
“About what?”
Crowley sighed:
“I suppose I should tell you the truth. Long story short, I’ve been impersonating you online, well your bookshop anyway, and got tangled with the shopkeepers’ matchmaking scheme.”
“Matchmaking?!” Aziraphale exclaimed. “With who?”
“Well you… and it turned out… me, ridiculous, I know right? Humans got all these sort of silly ideas I don’t even know where they got them from,” Crowley prattled. “You’re probably seeing that Brown guy anyway.”

“I just realised the intention behind most conversations I had with the Whickber Street shopkeepers these past few months. I wish I had known sooner so I would have put an end to all their schemings.”

“Oh no, my dear, not like that. I wish I had told you.”
“Told me what?”
“That I love you, I can’t hide it any longer,” Aziraphale confessed. “If you don’t return my feelings, that’s perfectly fine but I just thought you should know.”

“Don’t worry, my dear, nothing has to change, you’ve always been such a dear friend to me, I wouldn’t give it up for the world. I’ve only been the happiest when you’re with me.”
“Aziraphale, will you just let me speak,” Crowley interrupted.
Aziraphale fell silent.
“I love you too, Angel,” Crowley revealed. “I have since the garden of Eden.”
“This long?” Aziraphale whispered softly.
“I didn’t realise it until much later but yeah.”

Neither knew who started the kiss but they both felt sparks the moment their lips met. Somewhere they could hear the distant sound of multiple light bulbs exploding and the soulful song of a nightingale.
It was a first kiss but they have been longing for each other for so long it felt more like reacquaintance.
Like a “Oh hello, it’s you, of course it’s always been you”.
With a sigh, they broke the kiss after a moment, foreheads leaning against each other, feeling utterly content.
