Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose… www.twopercentco.com/rants/archiv... (From almost twenty fucking years ago…) 🫩
[Screenshot of text excerpt from a website, which reads:]

Listen, here's the point we constantly find ourselves having to explain: swears, like *all* words, convey several layers of meaning which *cannot be conveyed* by the use of other words. This is easily illustrated: if we say that Jim is a jerk and John is a motherfucking cocksucker, you can readily understand the not-so-subtle difference in our opinions of Jim and John. It is a simple fact of the English language — and, in fact, language in general — that approximate or even exact synonyms, through common usage, take on their own uniquely varying flavors which entirely color our perceptions of phrases that contain those words. We're talking about *all* words, here; it's the same story if we say that Dapper Dan in the fourth race at Preakness is "excellent," while Goes The Mile in the second is "magnificent" — again, there is a *difference* that is conveyed by the use of the two different words. The difference *itself* may be interpreted differently by different listeners, depending on their own past experience with such words, but it's clearly *there*.

I could lie, but I won't. I'm neither proud of nor happy about how often, how automatically, or in how many situations I mutter this line, and I can't vouch for how objectively accurate it is in most of those situations. But *subjectively*, it feels REEEEEAL fucking accurate in, like, 95% of them.

I kind of just don't have any doubt anymore: the vast majority of all current social media and mass communication trends are just another thing that Douglas Adams nailed almost 50 years ago.
[Excerpt from Chapter 6 of "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" by Douglas Adams]

“Meanwhile, the poor Babel fish, by effectively removing all barriers to communication between different races and cultures, has caused more and bloodier wars than anything else in the history of creation.”

Look, graphic design is hard, okay? (Said with affection by a guy who's been, among a dozen other things on my CV, a graphic designer and had to come up with all sorts of title and brand logos.) (But seriously, this was a stretch, guys.) (Maybe native Spanish speakers see it right away though.) 🤔
Photo of a screen featuring a title logo for some new show.

It says, and I shit you not:

Disney
O11CE
New Generation

Yes. "O11CE." That is what it says. I worked out, painstakingly, that it's supposed to be artistically representing an "N" with the "11" which is "eleven" which is what "ONCE" means in Spanish, but for fuck's sake, if I didn't know some Spanish, I'm not sure how that would ever have worked out.

Megalodon. I start on the top floor, wait for it to asphyxiate and die. Then fashion cutting tools from shelves and the beast's own teeth to cut it into pieces and haul it out back to the dumpster. Then sit with some tea and wonder how this sort of thing JUST KEEPS HAPPENING at every job I get.

[…] muses as the wind gently shifts the curtains by the window. "So my disguise must be able to strike terror into their hearts. I must be a creature of the night, black, terrible…a…a…"

As if in answer, a huge horse flies in the open window.

"A horse!" Bruce exclaims triumphantly. "That's it! It's an omen. I shall become a HORSE!"

And thus is born this weird figure of the dark…this avenger of evil, "The Horse-Man."

As he enters the Horse Cave later that night, he parks the Horsemobile and carefully removes his cape and bridle. Upset that he lost one of his prized Horsearangs when he threw it at […]

A 16-bit "high resolution" (for the time, 40 years ago) cartoon image of Rebecca "Burger" Heineman working at a computer and getting decapitated by a battle-axe wielded by a crazy guy wearing a horned helmet with beanie propellor on it. Contradicting stories have the guy either being Brian Fargo, her co-creator on Bard's Tale III, or (as Heineman herself said online) Mike Boone, former CEO of Boone Corporation, where a bunch of developers/creators worked before getting canned and forming Interplay.

These are the first two of my #SilhouetteUniverse👤 novels and, as it turns out, I did the art and design for both myself. 😉 (I do that sort of thing too. Professionally, I mean.) Universal link: sbufo.com/UR/?L=b2r #booksky
This is a book cover!

A stylized cartoon scene, as if done with paper cut-outs: a young woman with spiky black hair, in glasses and a theatrical outfit complete with a pink tutu, stands in a spotlight in front of red curtains and holds a magician's top hat in one hand; out of the hat, a green tentacle wriggles, bathed in otherworldly light. In the spotlight, on the floor at the woman's feet, a white bunny looks up apprehensively at the tentacle.

The text at the top of the image reads:

The text at the bottom of the image reads:
Magic, Mystery, Mayhem, and the lighter side of Death. This is a book cover!

Very abstract imagery. Sky blue wallpaper in the background; some cut-out white paper clouds hovering in front of the wall, and an unfolded chain of cut-out plain white paper figures linked hand to hand across the image, in front of the wall. In the center of the image, one figure has ripped free from the figures on either side of it; this particular paper figure has bunny ears (with pink inside) and a small strip of yellow paper is coiled above it like a halo.

The text at the top of the image reads:
JACKRABBIT MESSIAH

The text just below the figures and the clouds reads:

I dig 'em; sometimes I do, sometimes I don't—depends on the story, I guess. One current WIP: only two "chapters" but named VERY specifically. 😁 One WIP years ago: no chapter names, but about a dozen interesting phrases (maybe four to seven words) from the chapter itself, like a preview (e.g. 👇).
[Excerpt from "Cake - Book 1: Marley" (by me):]

ONE
The Distinguished Yaks ... have you seen this child? ... the sentinel ... Sleeper ... déjà vu ... a glass of ice cold Coca-Cola ... midnight birdsong ... all good ... an infinite second ... unconditional love.

She stops at the mouth of the alley, scans the shadows. A moment; a bulk of clothes, hair and odor shifts away from the rest of the darkness and shuffles slowly over to her. Anastasia speaks through a tired, tight-lipped smile: “I brought dinner.”

Kinda no contest here, as these are the only three I ever really *really* loved reading.
A Bill Watterson illustration of Calvin and Hobbes (from "Calvin & Hobbes").

The two of them are on a rock in the woods. Calvin (a scruffy little blond six-year-old) wears a pith helmet and carries a flag on a stick (which you can tell has "Calvin & Hobbes" written on it); Hobbes (his stuffed animal tiger who's all too real since no one else is in the panel with them) sits next to him with a paper bag (containing lunch, probably), eating an apple, and reading a crudely drawn map.A Berke Breathed illustration for the cover of his "Loose Tails" collection for "Bloom County," featuring a bunch of the main characters.

Cutter John sits in his wheelchair; hanging off the back is Milo Bloom; sitting on John's lap is Mike Binkley and a squirrel character (presumably the previous version of Portnoy the hedgehog); balancing on John's knee is Hodgepodge the rabbit; sitting by the wheelchair's nearer wheel is Bill the Cat, looking deranged as always; and perched on top of John's head is Opus the Penguin.A Gary Larson illustration of some typical characters from "The Far Side" drawn in his typical style, including: a caveman, a bear, a mad scientist, a dorky kid, a frumpy housewife, and (of course) a cow.
