The passing of Duncan Sheik was announced today. People about my age may know his one hit from the 90s, "Barely Breathing", but I'll share a song that I heard for the first time live in 2015 at Freight and Salvage in Berkeley, CA. It's become a favorite of mine. RIP Duncan. And thank you.

The news about the Pacifica Pier reminded me about the biggest political flashpoint in recent Pacifica history: the phrase "managed retreat". What a potent symbol in that ongoing conversation. The ocean cannot be held. I knew that as a kid growing up there. To believe otherwise is high fantasy.

It's not that AI is inherently terrible for all things. It's that we're not teaching people to understand how it works, and why it's good for certain tasks and bad for others. Saying, "It's good for everything but double-check the output" isn't really teaching people how to use it.
