What a thing to say. Over 9 million Americans live in LA county, close to 4 million live in the city of LA. Over a million live in San Diego. Not to mention the Port of LA and it's role in the economy.

That's fantastic! And it's the whole picture... the dapper, well-tailored suit complete with matching pocket square, tie and hat band, the way the white mustache and the dog match, and the discreet bamboo cane (perfect for pointing out things in the garden), even that fabulous bench. Love.

Peonies that spent the summer in a holding pattern in nursery pots finally got tucked into good dirt today. Full of eyes, but long absent labels, it'll be a surprise next June. Gorgeously blue fall day out there.

The plague in the news from Russia is most likely the nasty pneumonic sort given it involves a worker at a secure lab facility and they jumped on quarantines. The plague we see in the news periodically here in the US, mostly in the southwest, is the bubonic type endemic in rodents carried by fleas.

It's Saturday morning and Plague is in the news, so here's a little primer on the bacterium that, yes, was the cause of the Black Death in the middle ages. Not all plague is the same. All of it does need immediate treatment with antibiotics. 1/2 my.clevelandclinic.org/health/disea...

Does Plague Still Exist?
Plague has caused deadly outbreaks in the past. It still exists today, but it’s survivable if treated quickly with antibiotics.

Happy to have a hazelnut in the yard I didn't water once that dropped food out of the sky this season. Also, I do still eat almonds, because.

(Probably not a thread for a social media platform, but I'm a risk professional type and I can't help... seeing things, thinking things, asking too many questions...)

Anyway. Here's to every corner hanging on to the technicolor. Here's to insisting on a full chorus of voices. Of work with purpose and care. Here's to an end of professional spaces where we watch behaviors and wonder about which fraternities our colleagues might have been part of. Here's to better.

I worry the shifting baselines are a bigger deal than we think. It's like going back to Hawaii for the first time in 15 years and people being all excited about a snorkeling spot and "all the fish" and you go expecting what you saw before and it's just... empty. Thinned out. Washed out.

Have you noticed how there hasn't been a single picture about a serious meeting out of the White House or the Pentagon in months that is anything other than all men and 99% white ones? How the professional women are just gone? (Unqualified sycophants and minder wives don't count.)

At the end of a sabbatical and in the middle of finding a new gig and I can't help but be thinking a lot this week about American culture, about the men, about being done with/utterly uninterested in return to corporate with the all male meetings/the speaking over/the discounting however unconscious

Great weather day after a full day of rain yesterday meant smol-ish pup insisted we all go outside and stay there. She's now sleeping it off using a garden glove as a pillow. Neither creature was helpful with the weeding.

Had to go to three different places looking for a money order (no bank branch in town), still forget to pick up the batteries I needed and managed to come home without snacks. Also, it's very wet outside.

The Nooksack. And it's adjoining basin to the South, the Skagit...lots of water. Also, fishes. And farms (good ground...from all the flooding).

None of the solutions are easy or fast. The county has moved to buy up property, which helps if they can restore ecological function. But there's small communities all across this basin and the watershed extends into Canada. Lot's of work, lot's of study, still floods. www.usgs.gov/centers/pcms...

The Nooksack floods. It floods because settlers built in the floodplain and every other season, the waters do what they've always done and seek to move across the landscape. No judgement for this gathering, coming together in community is a good thing, but until the river has more room to move...

I rarely repost this cretin, but it feels important to mark the deep pathology here if for no other reason that it's a danger to dismiss this man as "crazy". Yes, and also, given our system, he has unlimited power to harm. It's dark because this is how he sees the world, dark. Plan to vote.

Still no, hell no. And if you're wearing one of these, necklace or pervert classes, you're allowing yourself to be surveilled and violating the privacy of everyone around you. It's very not cute. Again--what company is making the blocking device for all this nonsense? I want to buy stock.

Started the day with coffee and this audio featuring artist Nikki Lindt's work capturing the sounds of a changing artic. Not sure how it ended up in my feeds on LinkedIn of all places, but it's a good thing for a Sunday morning. www.wbur.org/hereandnow/2...

What does a changing climate sound like?
A warming climate brings plenty of visible changes, such as retreating glaciers and rising sea levels. Nikki Lindt is on a mission to capture its audible changes.

When I stepped over to this platform, I got quieter about the professional risk work I do, but I miss it so... Last year a very stark report from the UK's intelligence community surfaced, this week at the UN they shared some of it with other nations. The Guardian lays it out (with good links). 🧵

The snow geese are back in the Skagit!! When I was out at Summer Lake Oregon a few weeks ago surrounded by central flyway birds, I mentioned this winter migration. Geese and swans. Thousands of them. They chatter and hum, and when they lift the sky takes flight. www.instagram.com/reels/DdsV-t...

Don't think supply chains ever really went back to normal after the pandemic. There's regular holes now, have you noticed? Not just since the most recent debacle, for years now. Enough my brain's been reprogrammed to go "oh, that's back in stock, need to get a couple while it's in". It's just weird.

Same, has taken me longer, my families records were a mess and I had to request certified baptismal records from BANQ, that alone took three months. Getting close thankfully.

OMG--right? Funny somebody else knows what that means. It's such a process. Hence me painstakingly gathering every correct document, crossing every t, dotting every i so I can avoid having packets kicked back or sent off to dreaded bureaucratic purgatory. That Reddit community has been a lifesaver.

It's Canadian by descent paperwork and there's a step to complete records by having birth certificates issued for those who only had baptismal records and you gotta prove they're dead apparently or maybe it's just another record in support. Dunno. It's a bit fuzzy, but whatever it takes.

The minor-madness of having to track down records proving family members born in 1847 and 1877 are well and truly dead is a little something. I only wish I was walking around with those sorts of longevity genes and still able to have the Great (great) Grand-das and Grandmamas over for Sunday suppers

Cloudy morning turned into a perfect September day, pulled weeds, dug into a NATO job (maybe?!), planted a new black currant. Dogs are watching the world from the deck. Feels very much like the "hustle and get things in order" season matched with "I'll just sit out here with a hat and read some".
