Our exhibition ‘Whittington: The Man, The Myth and The Cat’ tells the story of medieval merchant & Lord Mayor Richard Whittington & how this became the famous tale & pantomime through materials in our Whittington collections. His bequest founded Guildhall Library in 1425. Many cat pictures as well 😺
Branding for the exhibition showing a double black and white image of Whittington in his mayoral robes. On the left his hand is on a human skull, on the right his hand is placed on a cat.‘History of Whittington and his Cat’. London, between 1855-1860. Detail from an uncut book sheet, hand-coloured. Shows a cat facing left crouching on grass under red curtains. An ornate border surrounds the title and illustration.‘Dick Whittington and his cat: book of words’. London: Lyceum Theatre, 1919. Colour illustration shows Whittington in cap with feather, carrying belongings in a red bundle on a stick over left shoulder. A long-haired cat sits to the right.‘The true portraiture of Richard Whittington’ Unknown publication. Black and white print. Detail of cat facing right. Complete image shows Whittington in his robes and official mayoral chain.
