Every time a disc enters or exits a console this cat will be there. Calcifer will hear the disc tray from across the house and sprint over to face his arch nemesis. He wants to kill Playstation discs the most. Whether it’s PS3, 4, or 5, they’re his most hated foe

A small gray bunny sits on a soft blanket. The overlaid text reads: “This bunny wants you to feel better.”

not a big fan of when there's "good" and "bad" and one of them is just objectively optimal

I got thrown because everything else you said agrees with what I said too but I was replying to "you're conflicted about this guy his work isn't even that great" ...a stance that isn't compatible with the other things we're both saying lol

the other side is thinking one's work is good shouldn't factor into wanting to excuse someone

for instance, is there a quality threshold that *would* justify the defense you're seeing to you? if not, then it doesn't make sense to establish the link just musing.

big_throwaway (仮) @secondthrowaway.bsky.social · 12h
I've been reading takes on the topic of separating work quality considerations from personal character considerations (about different news before this) bad people make good things good people make bad things, linking the two supposedly risks making invalid extrapolations

I guess I think personal matters should usually remain personal matters unless there's broader dangers that exist and would be properly mitigated by disclosure that goes both ways though, I don't think good deeds should be done with the expectation of public praise either

maybe I don't (and likely won't) understand how having an audience distorts the concept of who one justifiably needs to be held accountable to and how

big_throwaway (仮) @secondthrowaway.bsky.social · 14h
it just looks to me that this is personal dirty laundry and I don't get what made it a scenario where the internet mob needs to reflect for once on what amount of internet mob justice is appropriate

Anyway, my confusion as an outsider fueled by third-hand discussion I've seen, because it sounds like "wow this person did some fucked up shit years ago, and apparently he's improved himself since but we're only just hearing about it now so what do we do" why do you have to do anything?
210
big_throwaway (仮) @secondthrowaway.bsky.social · 14h
not to sound flippant but so far my impression is of people confusedly picking up and putting down pitchforks but my own confusion comes from not knowing who put it in the news now. If he did it himself then that raises some questions if someone else did, that raises different questions.
100
big_throwaway (仮) @secondthrowaway.bsky.social · 14h
so then that leaves me with two main questions: what caused it to suddenly be everyone's business and why is it everyone's business? I'm seeing people say "I don't want to pass judgment until I hear the victim's side" does the victim even want the spotlight?
100
big_throwaway (仮) @secondthrowaway.bsky.social · 14h
normally it's a black and white situation and you find out someone is just secretly heinous and has been the whole time and still is and that's that, but I guess in this case that's not true and now the audience is trying to figure out how to grapple with it?
100
big_throwaway (仮) @secondthrowaway.bsky.social · 14h
the impression I have is that he assaulted someone a while ago and the news coming out now is that since he handled it like a normal person instead of a monster nobody knows what to do with themselves

I read an article that was supposedly so well-liked that it was being ddos'd by people trying to read it all at the same time, so that's where I'd be coming from

I'm picking up details about a YouTuber and while I don't know much about them or their situation, the little that I'm gathering has me wondering things that require asking people things to clarify but I don't want to bumble around cluelessly nor do I know who I can ask about it to get my bearings

I’ll also add that most of the heat should be directed at USA Today, but the journalists who participated in this breach of ethics also made a choice. Organizations are made up of people. We can’t absolve the people who do harm on the behalf of an organization.

As an expert on sexual violence, I have to add that these ethical violations are a nightmare for interviews on sensitive subjects. I would never recommend ANY survivor goes public with their story at an outlet that would do this to them.

I'm not linking the piece because I'd like for as few people to read it as possible. I'm writing about it here because: - I want to be clear about what happened to anyone who saw that article and felt betrayed to see me associated with it. - These are bad decisions that deserve public shame.

We at Skype a Scientist are deeply troubled by the closure of the Academy of Natural Sciences. We urge you to contact Drexel University Leadership and Academy interim leader Trish Wellenbach to urge them to reopen the museum. President Merlo president@Drexel.edu Trish Wellenbach tw958@drexel.edu
a block of text with a statement that reads We at Skype a Scientist are deeply alarmed by the decision of Drexel University leadership and the Academy of Natural Sciences Board to close the Academy’s public museum.

Skype a Scientist is based in Philadelphia with deep roots in our city. Making science accessible, in particular for Philly’s children, is a top priority for our organization. We operate in community centers, at street festivals, and at the intersection of science and art. For the last 10 years, we have worked to engage a broader coalition of Philly residents to care for our local biodiversity.

Our program does not exist in a vacuum. The work that we do, alongside environmental education centers, our museums, classroom teachers, and more, create an ecosystem of connections with science. The loss of any part of this fragile ecosystem is detrimental. The Academy of Natural Sciences grounds biodiversity education in Philadelphia. With grand fossil halls, historical connections, and engaging exhibits, it is a place where many Philadelphians develop a love of science. Loss of access to this space cannot be tolerated.

We are living through an erosion of public education, particularly in the life sciences. Philadelphia cannot afford to lose our flagship biodiversity museum.

We call on the leaders of Drexel University and the Academy board to reverse their decision to close the Academy’s public museum. The children of Philadelphia and future generations of Philly-made scientists are counting on you.
