📊 The idea is simple: instead of spending time fighting with Word shapes or TikZ, you choose a template (e.g. single or multi-step mechanisms, parallel pathways, moderators, confounders), add your variable labels, and get a consistent causal process plot.

When the state doesn’t meet the needs of certain communities, rebels can step in and provide alternative institutions that respond to local demands. This setup lowers the governance costs for rebels and helps them collaborate with civilians to keep these institutions hidden.

🪖 Traditional theories argue that rebels need full territorial control to govern. We challenge that view, and argue that low state responsiveness toward rebel-aligned populations creates openings for insurgent institutions, even in state-dominated zones.

⏳ What people fail to tell you about fieldwork is that its mosty waiting: waiting for authorization, waiting for respondents, waiting for transport, waiting for food.

Tonight is the opening game of #AFCON in Côte d’Ivoire. Disappointed to not be there in person, but excited that I can see the full tournament on Swedish tv. So I will be cheering for Les Élephants from 🇸🇪

🇨🇮 I evaluate the argument by leveraging a natural experiment from Western Côte d'Ivoire, where more legitimacy-seeking and more legitimacy-indifferent armed groups came to control proximate and highly comparable communities because of an arbitrary ceasefire line.

Sebastian van Baalen @sebastianvanbaalen.se · 04/01/2024
☮️ Building on insights on rebel governance, I argue that more legitimacy-seeking armed groups are more prone to develop institutions and practices to restrain communal conflict onset and escalation than more legitimacy-indifferent armed groups.

Sebastian van Baalen @sebastianvanbaalen.se · 04/01/2024
The article starts from the observation that most communal conflicts take place in civil war-affected countries, yet armed actors are under-theorised in communal conflict processes. Moreover, armed actors are primarily seen as violence agitators rather than restraining forces.

🥜 Field research is often about learning about more than just your research question; it often requires understanding other economic, social, and political facets of the case. Such as how cashew nuts are grown and processed.
