I didn't disagree with anything in your paper. You just make a leap from "Democrats are too far right" to "the left is a majority" that isn't supported. Even if you were interpreting the data correctly surveys just don't matter that much to victory. Otherwise the left would win more often.

And local is what matters. Good candidates get filtered out LONG before these nat surveys matter. 2nd issue with the conclusion that we're a majority is that we could have 80% support for 5 progressive issues & when that 20% disagreement is offset that still has leftists losing 100% of the time.

My point isn't "I talked to people" it's "I get paid to win elections." It takes experience to know what data is relevant. Opinion surveys are kinda useless. Especially national surveys. "A general truth is applicable to specific circumstances is a fallacy". Local elections are always specific.

Why would I want it to be unnoticed? I'm not in FAVOR of the system. I just think we need to be honest about it if we want the left to claw our way to power. The OP implied there were no good reasons for the Dems going right. But there are. Not morally good, but pragmatic of a sort.

I kinda agree. What I've seen is that there's very much a "gotta pay your dues" attitude that effectively silences new voices. But imo thinking of it as a debate over principles is missing the point. It's high school drama. There's nothing lofty about it.

Oh I agree. Elections aren't surveys of policy. But the avg voter doesn't vote on policy, they vote on familiarity & even if they did People aren't a monolith. Supporting a progressive policy or three doesn't mean they'll support a progressive. Especially given how racist & transphobic folks are.

Idk how to distill years of experience & a dozen campaigns across multiple states into a tweet. Sorry. 😮‍💨 But yes. Campaigning is the thing I'm an expert at. All politics is local. People aren't a monolith. Etc If you wanna have a genuine conversation feel free to DM me but Soc Media bums me out.

Yes but we're too focused on higher office. We ignore the playoffs, show up at the Superbowl, & complain that there's only two options. Plus, corporate interests don't usually get involved at the lower levels & yet we still lose. The AOCs and mamdanis are great. But we need them at every level.

The surveys are of people who agree to take surveys. Elections survey voters. Volunteers on big elections tend to skew young. Volunteers on local ones tend to skew 50+. We need to build the bench or the only people who make it through the local filter are already ten steps further right.

Sean @seanshivers.bsky.social · 26/02/2026
Ah yes because the surveys are so accurate and meaningful. I agree with your principals but campaigns aren't won with principals. The system is too fucked for that. Look at the data that actually matters. Who votes. Who volunteers. Who donates. Or we'll keep losing to moderates. 😮‍💨

I've worked in campaigns for 15 years & knocked thousands of doors. I'm v. left... the misconception is that we are anything other than a minority. It 100% is what VOTERS want. Non-voters may be but 🤷. They're expensive. Also leftists really underestimate how conservative non-white voters are.

Yup. My grand awakening was when I was 18 and knocking doors for Obama.. average is a grand lie. There are a bunch of groups that each have their own average... And our group is a relatively small one.

Yes we've devastated art education AND the community that surrounds it. Something I think a lot of artists don't understand is that they've created insular (& algorithmically enforced) communities around themselves and they are impossible to find for normal people (ie prospective employers).

That autistic urge to ask what's changed... Because it's just gone from busy and colorfully overstimulating to slightly less busy and colorfully overstimulating.

Big choice! I can see the value either way, but this definitely feels like the best way to protect crash course as a legacy... Past your or John's deaths. I was definitely afraid it was getting sold when I saw the original announcement.

Take nothing personally. The bots aren't worth it. You're doing good work. Stay focused on the good work you're pushing the conversation in the right direction. Everything is political. Blind partisanship is bad but lack of partisanship is just abdicating agency & cowardice.

Except people talk about how everyone deserves kindness and racism is bad... And then vote to support ice and spend all their time advocating against housing in their neighborhood. Imperfection is fine. Aspirational is great. But there is a point where it's just lying.

Real politics occurs locally. Almost nothing that occurs here is doing the actual work that needs to be done. There's a reason it's so demoralizing... It's trying to move a mountain. I switched from working on national campaigns to working on local 10 years ago. Best decision I ever made.
