The fiscal year is over. The dying Social, Behavioral, and Economic division of NSF ended up awarding 90 total grants this year, as opposed to ~700-800 in recent past years. Source: grantwitness.org/nsf/analyses...

The graph shows the cumulative number of awards made by month across this fiscal year, as compared to the last 6 fiscal years. The line for this year is total flat until June, but then finally gets up to 91 by October. In prior years the increase starts building earlier and ends on average in the 700-800 range (with variability, last year was only between 400-500).

This is spot on. The year after I stopped playing Little League, my former team won the US championship. The parents were nuts, and I’m so glad I got out when I did. Every parent was convinced their kid would go pro. One played played for the Yakima Bears for one year.

NSF has reduced the research budget for all atmospheric, ocean, and earth sciences by ~80%. 80%! A lot of us will not be conducting new research or training new students for the foreseeable future.

this. do you know how embarassing it was to watch a sporting event on tv in a room where you're the only trans person? and that "kamala is for they them ad" comes on and everyone knows it's about you? and they all just kinda laugh nervously or look uncomfortable? because it wears on us.

I don't think people really understand the psychic impact of knowing that multiple times a day every day your friends, family, coworkers, neighbors, and everyone who could ever have any power over you is being flooded with agitprop designed to make them hate you

One of the more insidious phrasings I've seen with the Dems/trans rights discourse lately is the idea that trans people are being greedy and demanding a "maximalist" approach to trans rights. No, you cannot call the state of rights American trans people had as recently as 2023 "maximalist," sorry.

Had this happen once (out of a handful of meals) as well. Takeout was delayed by about an hour because of kitchen understaffing. We’d brought our dogs to the park a few blocks away, so just stayed longer than expected. But if we’d needed to be somewhere or feed littles, it would have been an issue.

I am guessing this reasoning accounts for a lot of the trend. If Rabhi had made less movement toward the NIMBY electorate, he would have gotten me there too. More well-reasoned debate would be great. I hope you are right, and that we don’t return to the conspiracy mongering of recent counsels.

000

Sean D. Johnson @seanjohnson.bsky.social · 05/08/2026

You’re not wrong, but even so, Rabhi’s apparent ability to keep two constituencies that I thought were incompatible behind the same campaign is quite something (that I don’t like)

Cynthia Harrison (Ward 1 CM incumbent, endorsed by incumbent Mayor Taylor) and Yousef Rabhi (challenging Taylor) both ahead in every ward 1 precinct among votes counted so far. Utterly bizarre local election. Odds of increased yelling on #A2Council looking high.
