Yes, Daniel and I identified that tactic (cherry-picking); Niigaan and I have recently expanded this argumentation to show specifically how hyper-fixation about Kamloops (an ongoing investigation mind you) is serving denialism: canadiandimension.com/articles/vie...

I think this is an important point. @seancarleton.bsky.social & Daniel Heath Justice have argued that cherry picking is a fundamental part of the denialist project and this is a related kind of move.

As victims of Kamloops Residential School are once more victimized by professional deniers and masked white supremacists, remember this important corrective by @niigaanwewidam.bsky.social and @seancarleton.bsky.social And wear your Orange Shirt humbly. canadiandimension.com/articles/vie...
In short, there is no hoax, conspiracy, or “big lie.” Denialists’ focus on assigning blame for “grave errors” at Kamloops is a deceptive strategy and a distraction tactic. It draws attention away from the already-existing evidence of child death at Kamloops (51 according to the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation), the recent government cuts to funding for searches to identify potential missing children and unmarked burials, and the rising number of additional confirmed deaths and exhumations as part of other residential school investigations taking place across the country—as called for by the TRC in its Calls to Action 71-76.

Perhaps it will be proven, some day, that there are hundreds of unmarked graves at Kamloops. But it was not proven to be true in May, 2021. It is not proven to be true today."

Sean Carleton @seancarleton.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
Many of those early stories, including in this newspaper, made reference to “mass graves” (a historically fraught phrase that does not appear in the Tk’emlúps 2021 press release).
160
Sean Carleton @seancarleton.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
Incorrect. The Globe is specifically addressing use of "mass graves." : "The media, including The Globe and Mail, did not initially scrutinize, much less challenge, that assertion. The initial headlines and stories in the media simply stated as fact that the remains of 215 children had been found.

That's why Ellen and I wrote When the Pine Needles Fall - to amplify Ellen's voice and perspective, but also to make connections to what's happening today, in Kanehsatà꞉ke and around the world, and to inspire hope and resistance for a better future for all

It's a similar fight against dispossession and settler capitalism that many Indigenous Nations are facing today.

Today, September 26, marks the end of the Mohawk Resistance of 1990. But, the land struggle at the heart of that movement - a struggle that had been raging in Kanehsatà꞉ke for 270 years - continues today, as my friend Ellen Gabriel always makes clear.
