Israel escalated its rhetoric against Turkey on Thursday, two days after it struck the Abu al-Duhur air base in northwestern Syria eight times over alleged Turkish presence. On X, Defense Minister Katz said President Erdoğan "is dragging Turkey into dangerous adventures in Syria," and should "continue delivering empty, delusional speeches against Israel" rather than test its resolve to defend itself.

BERLIN, Feb. 3.—Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels today ended the professional careers of five "Aryan" actors and cabaret announcers by expelling them from the Reich's Chamber of Culture on the grounds that “in their public appearances they displayed a lack of any positive attitude toward National Socialism and therewith caused grave annoyance in public and especially to party comrades.” The five include perhaps the best known German stage comedians who survived previous Chamber of Culture purges and still dared to indulge in political witticisms—namely, Werner Finck, Peter Sachse and “The Three Rulands,” represented by Helmuth Buth, Wilhelm Meissner and Manfred Dlugi. Their expulsion means that they are henceforth forbidden to appear before the public in Germany.

Besides motivating this action in an official communiqué, Dr. Goebbels also publishes a long article in the Voelkischer Beobachter in which he denounces them as “brazen, impertinent, arrogant and tactless" and generally imitators and successors to Jews. Simultaneously he denounces the "society rabble that followed them with thundering applause—parasitic scum, inhabiting our luxury streets, that seems to have only the task of proving with how little brains people can get along and even acquire money and prominence."

The shooting occurred at about 10:15 a.m. when two gunmen opened fire at people waiting at a bus stop at a busy junction, the police said. The police added in a statement that a soldier and several civilians at the bus stop had “engaged the attackers and returned fire,” killing them on the spot.

The junction where the attack took place is in Ramot, a large area that Israel took in the Arab-Israeli war of 1967 and later annexed. The Palestinians and much of the rest of world consider Ramot to be a settlement in occupied territory.

The policy dates to Israel’s beginnings in 1948, when David Ben-Gurion, the nation’s founding prime minister, granted the exemption to the 400 yeshiva students in the country at the time. Ben-Gurion envisioned their Torah study — which they believed would safeguard Israel from its enemies — as part of a revitalization of Jewish religious scholarship lost in the Holocaust.

But as the ultra-Orthodox population grew, the policy was extended, setting off backlash and legal challenges over many years. It did not help that the most extreme ultra-Orthodox sects were anti-Zionists who do not recognize the state of Israel because, they say, it was founded by secular Jews and not for a divine purpose.

In June 2024, the Israeli Supreme Court finally ruled in a landmark decision that without a formal law there was no legal basis for the exemption, and ordered the military to begin drafting ultra-Orthodox men.
