It was great to welcome 92 pupils from Knox Academy to the Seabird Centre last month for two days. We explored the world of rocky shore ecology, surveyed seaweeds, and explored our Discovery Experience too! A big thanks to the Hamish and Doris Crichton Charitable Trust for making this possible.

In a year where our local puffin breeding numbers have been a little lower, this is a timely reminder of just how nationally iconic and loved these charismatic wee seabirds are.

In fact, herring gulls traditionally nest on cliffs and remote islands; but loss of habitat and reduction in food sources have led to these intelligent, adaptable seabirds seeking alternative urban nesting sites.

Through our work on the Lamb - and our partnership with @rspbscotland.bsky.social on their Craigleith and Fidra reserves – we’re striving to safeguard these spectacular seabirds for generations to come.

Scottish Seabird Centre @seabirdcentre.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
In light of the rising threats, ongoing monitoring is vital to help us understand the health of the seabirds that call our coasts home. We’ll continue to support the efforts of the amazing Forth Seabird Group who have been recording seabird populations on the islands in the Forth since 1959!
110
Scottish Seabird Centre @seabirdcentre.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
To protect puffin populations, it is vital that we do all we can to tackle climate change while also reducing the impact of other pressures such as invasive non-native species, unsustainable fishing practices, and offshore developments in unsuitable locations.
110
Scottish Seabird Centre @seabirdcentre.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
The Isle of May, one of the largest puffin colonies on the East Coast, recently reported a drop of 30%. And while the respective 20% and 15% declines on Craigleith and the Lamb are within more normal fluctuation levels, it remains a concerning reminder of how precarious life is for these seabirds.
110
Scottish Seabird Centre @seabirdcentre.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
Puffins are particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, including an increased regularity of extreme storms and a reduction in food availability due to rising sea temperatures.

Scottish Seabird Centre @seabirdcentre.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
Worrying news for puffins in the Firth of Forth📢 Our recent puffin burrow counts have revealed a drop in puffin numbers on the local islands off the coast of North Berwick.

September's seabird of the month is the manx shearwater! Scotland's breeding manx shearwaters are mainly found on Scotland's Northern & Western Isles, but are best spotted round the coast in spring & autumn flying low over the sea as they migrate✈️ Have you spotted any manx shearwaters recently?

This follows the 20,000 plus emails that have been sent to them so far via our latest e-action. With consent for Berwick Bank still conditional on a compensation plan being approved by Ministers, it’s vital that MSPs make clear this deep public concern surrounding the development.

This week, we delivered 129 hand-written postcards - one for each MSP - to Scottish Parliament. These cards feature our recent sand art created on the East Lothian coast, serving as a powerful reminder to MSPs, on the day they returned from summer recess, of the public opposition to Berwick Bank.
