As an aspiring picture book writer who has spent a fortune in conferences, assessments, pitch opportunities and more, this is exactly the thread I needed today! Thank you! It can be so discouraging to get so close but not quite over the line. Keeping writing is the key. 💕

I talk to a lot of aspiring picture book writers who have spent YEARS working on their first book. And revision is great! It's essential! But you know what's really the key to picture book success? Write something new. Then do that again. (thread)

If you enjoyed a novel, contact the author and let them know! Writing can be a difficult, anxious, uncertain, and often insecure profession. Yet a huge amount of joy comes from connecting with readers. So don't be afraid to write to a beloved author – it could very genuinely brighten their day.

Good point! Some are ghost written, and others are edited substantially. In any event, it’s the name on the cover that sells the books. Authors should be given more opportunities to share their talent, rather than jostling for shelf space next to a footy player or a soap star.

Sue Scott @sdscottwriter.bsky.social · 17/11/2024

Sorry … not sure how to get around that. The article is basically a plea for publishers to value the work of professionals, rather than further filling the coffers of celebrities.

Sue Scott @sdscottwriter.bsky.social · 17/11/2024

Exactly! I keep being told to view publishing as a business…. I just wish it was the business of a beautifully crafted story!

I bought this, never got round to reading it, and now probably have to give it away (hopefully). But just wanted to share first - if ever you thought picture books were not not worthy of real study, there’s this 500 page beefcake academic textbook that ONLY COVERS PICTURE BOOKS #books #kidlit

I like that Australians on 🦋 identify themselves as Australian. It makes it so much easier to make the decision to follow. Put your Nationality in please. It matters for selection.

To those disheartened by publisher rejections: I started submitting queries & manuscripts to kidlit publishers in 1995. During the 15 yrs before my first children's book contract, I sometimes felt like giving up. Take a break if you need to, but PERSEVERE. Your time will come.

Found object art featuring broken Carnation Pink Crayola crayon. Out of the broken part jumps an illustration of a joy-filled girl clutching a pencil in one hand and a notebook in the other.

Just a quick note to those new here, if you think someone's post is worth other people reading, repost it. Liking it does not have the same effect here as on the dead-bird site. There is no algorithm. That's one of the reasons we like it.
