Oh dear, I am tempted to respond to a person with Influence In Birding who has a belittling, dismissive thread on here but then I’d give them more attention. ARG! Also it may be on purpose to provoke people? Which has definitely worked on me. Posting an awesome bird instead. (Ruddy Duck) #birds 🌿

Franz Marc : The First Animals, 1913 Gouache and pencil on paper 39 x× 46.7 cm | 15 × 18 in Further description in the alt text 👇
The artwork features stylized, bold depictions of animals, primarily horses, rendered through geometric planes and sharp angles.

Color Symbolism:
Marc used bright, vivid colors to show emotion and spirituality rather than real life. He often used blue to mean spiritual and calm feelings, and red to mean heavy earth and energy.

View of Nature:
Marc believed that animals were purer and more connected to the universe than humans. He painted them to show a spiritual harmony in nature.

I am so fascinated with these spotted sandstone patterns and how they formed. I believe the spots are iron oxide and are much harder than the surrounding stone which is why it retains its shape and rich rust color. I’m sure the consistent wetting and drying cycles also play a large part…anywho …

Helen Frankenthaler : Blue Territory, 1955 Oil & enamel on canvas 291.6 × 150.3 cm 114-3/16 × 59-3/16 in Whitney Museum This is an early example of her soak-stain technique, which transformed modern art and bridged the transition from Abstract Expressionism to Color Field painting. Much more 👇
Inspired by Jackson Pollock's method of pouring and dripping paint onto canvases laid flat on the studio floor, Frankenthaler took the process a step further. For Blue Territory, she thinned her oil and enamel paints with turpentine and poured them directly onto raw, unprimed canvas.

Instead of sitting on top of the surface as a thick layer of impasto, the diluted pigment soaked completely into the fabric. This uneven rate of absorption allowed her to create sweeping, watercolor-like swathes of deeply saturated color juxtaposed with diaphanous, translucent pools. The technique fused color and canvas into a singular, flattened entity, eliminating any illusion of traditional three-dimensional perspective.

The Story Behind the Title
Frankenthaler noted that she found titling her highly abstract pieces to be quite difficult. Rather than assigning rigid numbers or sentimental names, she preferred to title her artwork based on an image or mood that seemed to naturally emerge from the completed canvas. In the case of Blue Territory, the expansive, atmospheric washes of blue conjured a distinct geographical or atmospheric domain—what she described as an "abstract climate" of light, memory, and movement. The evocative title later inspired the mid-century poet Frank O'Hara to write a poem dedicated to it.

Tarsila do Amaral : Abaporu, 1928 Oil on canvas 33-7/16 × 28-3/4 in | 85 × 73 cm Museum of Latin American Art of Buenos Aires (MALBA) Further info in the alt text 👇
Meaning:
The name comes from the Tupi-Guarani words meaning "the man who eats human flesh" (cannibal).

Creation:
Tarsila painted it in January 1928 as a birthday gift for her then-husband, the writer Oswald de Andrade.

Appearance:
It shows a solitary, nude figure with a tiny head and giant hands and feet sitting next to a green cactus and a yellow sun.

The artwork inspired Oswald de Andrade to write the Anthropophagic Manifesto (Manifesto Antropófago).

Metaphor:
The movement used cultural cannibalism to describe how Brazil should "devour" European art influences and transform them into something original and uniquely Brazilian.

The imposing Callanish Stones stand talk with their shadows spanning out across the glass. It's a super clear sky, but looks cold. Above the central stone is a strange figure-of-8 shape of dots. This is the location of the Sun, at noon, on various different days across the year.
