Very similar to my feelings about INK come to think of it…

Coming back now that I’ve seen the film to say: I’m with you! Though to me it’s less Hansen, more the way it builds to [CENSORED ENDING] as if it were a salacious plot twist and not a real, deeply uncomfortable tragedy. It’s self-aware (form matching content) but still left a bad taste in my mouth.

My favorite genre of iPhone app is “used to do one thing extremely well & everyone used it, spends a decade piling on inexplicable redesigns and features, now barely does that one thing.” Venmo, Ultimate Guitar. I don’t understand what motivates this self sabotage, but I love it.

I’m at the Toronto International Film Festival right now, and they have this ad that plays before every screening where people quote movie lines back and forth at each other. I thought “hey, when is the Movie Quotes Guys ever going to happen?” Then I checked my feed and it had just dropped.

this is excellent
stigmatizing Rowling’s weaponization of childhood not only requires personal withdrawal for most people, it necessitates something much more difficult: being a giant fucking killjoy. You should tell people discussing the show that you’re not watching it, and why, and you should let yourself openly cringe at your sister-in-law’s Harry Potter tote bag, and you should bring up unprompted that the onslaught of legislation against trans people makes you sad and angry, presuming it does, and you should do this because, not despite, the fact that it will make you look annoying as hell and may make everyone present uncomfortable. (You probably won’t even get the kudos of looking like a cool ally, because you’re still ultimately talking about Harry Potter. Sorry about that.)

Free Atlantic op-ed template! Title: Progressives Must Reject X Outline: * X is a leftist who criticizes Israel [1 par] * Certainly, criticizing Israel is lorem ipsum. However, many [no citation] fear X is antisemitic [1 par] * We must reject antisemitism [6 par] * Ergo, we must reject X [1 par]

Here's his argument: * Anti-semitism is bad. El-Sayed and Piker both claim to be against it. * But that claim only matters if you actually disavow anti-semites in your party. * Therefore, El-Sayed needs to disavow Piker. Do you see the glaring assumption buried in this argument?

Basically playing in the sandbox of your own hangups, orchestrating a life that can use them / derive joy from them. I think the third person nature of it, the mildly exhibitionist desire to be seen, and to be seen naughty / blood-splattered / irreverent fits so well as the end of a three film arc.

To me, the progression of Schoenbrun’s work goes something like: * There’s a gap between inside and outside * That gap can be intensely painful if not addressed * Even if you never fully close the gap, you can own it by *playing* within it. Amplify the third person. Give in to the chase.

It’s been months since I caught TEENAGE SEX AND DEATH AT CAMP MIAMSA in a sleep deprived stupor, so my memory is hazy. But I’m surprised I haven’t seen much written about its relationship to camp — specifically, the way that performance can be a way of owning “otherness.”

Obviously people are embarrassed about how they talked online. It was a self-conscious moment: everyone was clumsy for a few weeks, trying to navigate difficult shit at a time when isolation made social media feel like they were “in the public eye.” Is that what we’re whining about 6 years later?

Stephen David Miller @sdavidmiller.bsky.social · 14/08/2026
This isn’t some grand act of historical revisionism. It was the text, available to anyone who had even the barest desire to engage with the material. And I hate the idea that we’ve collectively agreed that the laziest, most hand-wavey interpretation of this stuff is accurate and must be atoned for.

“Defund the police” always meant “redistribute funding to others trained to serve people rather than brutalize them.” “How To Be An Antiracist” was always about supporting policies that result in fairer outcomes, not a call to shed crocodile tears about being white.

I’d love for a progressive critic of “Woke 1.0” to explain which positions exactly they want to disavow. Meaning the substance behind certain movements, not the fact that the internet doesn’t interpret language in the spirit it was meant & in hindsight you wish your slogans had been better crafted.

This is one of those rare uncontroversial use cases of AI: a mind-numbing task which it can absolutely crush, and which no salaried employee (to my knowledge) has a desire to do by hand. But for some reason, no one seems to want to spend the -- I'm gonna generously 3 hours -- it would take to do it?

(Of course, this isn’t just a human nature problem. Like Elon and “Full Self-Driving”, AI companies have encouraged this total abdication of thought, whatever perfunctory disclaimers they toss out to the contrary.)

This is the same curse we worried about in the early self driving days: the moment you even resemble automation, people will take their hands off the wheel. A tool that should have reduced cognitive load around stuff that didn’t matter, has been used to fully remove cognition. Now no one is driving.

Meanwhile, big companies hold board meetings where AI-generated PowerPoint slides are used to communicate AI-drafted strategies, using jargon neither the speaker nor the audience understands. Emails are sent out with multi-paragraph updates saying nothing, read by no one.

The common refrain in industry is that AI is turning every software developer into a Product Manager and QA engineer — yet the net effect is products hitting the market that have clearly been designed and tested by no one. What was meant to make you efficient instead became a crutch.

Stephen David Miller @sdavidmiller.bsky.social · 06/08/2026
For every 10% improvement in technology, people get 50% lazier in their dependence on it. This is the curse of AI—tools which have clear uses (faster software dev & research loops, processing unstructured data) but have instead become an excuse to outsource creativity, attention, and thought.
