Start the new month off right with some positive news stories about environmental and wildlife recovery – discover our highlights below. ⬇️ #StorytellingForChange #CleanEnergy #ConsciousFoodSystems #TurtleConservation #OzoneLayer
A report on “positive tipping points” – thresholds where progress on environmental restoration becomes rapid and self-reinforcing – has found that clean electricity offers the biggest opportunity to trigger a cascade of transformative changes. Cheaper solar and wind power has impacts beyond the energy sector, making electric transport and cleaner industrial processes more affordable, while reducing air pollution.The first Global Conscious Food Systems Summit was held in Bhutan, bringing together political leaders, Indigenous Peoples, farmers, scientists, businesses, young people and development practitioners to explore how values, mindsets, culture and relationships shape policy and decision-making. The participants launched a Conscious Food Systems Framework that they will now start testing at the country level.Charapa turtle (Podocnemis unifilis) numbers in the Ecuadorian Amazon had been declining due to hunting, pollution and environmental changes. Now a group of Indigenous Siekopai women are combining traditional knowledge and technology to help them recover. They use an app to collect nesting data and take the eggs to an incubation facility, where they care for the turtles before releasing them.A new report from the World Meteorological Organization states that 2025’s Antarctic ozone hole was one of the smallest in recent decades. Despite annual fluctuations, results over the long term trend towards the healing of the ozone layer, testifying to the success of continuing global measures to phase out ozone-depleting substances like chlorofluorocarbons.

The Matsya Paripusti initiative in Assam has received the state government’s prestigious Karmashree Award in recognition of its contribution to child nutrition. The initiative transforms small indigenous fish into a nutrient-rich powder that is added to school meals, strengthening healthy child development. It also supports livelihoods for local fishers and the women who play a key role in processing the fish.The tide has returned to Greatham Marsh for the first time in 200 years thanks to a UK Environment Agency restoration project. The restoration will re-establish coastal saltmarsh, mudflat and high tide roosts, providing valuable wetland habitats for internationally important species, improving water quality and strengthening the area’s resilience to climate change and sea level rise.The UN has awarded three new World Restoration Flagships in Brazil, the Sahel region and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Contributing to global commitments to restore one million hectares by 2030, these initiatives will transform degraded ecosystems in regions facing drought, desertification and climate change. This will support biodiversity, resilience, landscape productivity, livelihoods and food security.Professor Kaveh Madani received the 2026 Stockholm Water Prize for his groundbreaking research and leadership in water governance. His work has improved understanding of complex water challenges, transformed how governments manage water crises – shifting the focus from infrastructure to governance – and developed science-based approaches to water conflict resolution and sustainable river basin management.

Despite news that only 36% of assessable SDG targets are on track or making moderate progress, there are lots of positive stories to read in July. Did you know that ~1 billion people have gained access to safely managed drinking water since 2015? Read more. ⬇️ #StrategicCommunications #SDGs
An empowering initiative in Sierra Leone is supporting people with limb loss to gain skills, independence and an income. The ‘Farming on Crutches’ programme is teaching amputees how to farm sustainably, enabling many to grow their own food and launch small commercial plots. The programme recently welcomed its 100th participant, and has plans to expand to other West African countries in the coming years.The UK has become the latest nation to formally ratify the High Seas Treaty. It aims to safeguard ecosystems across international waters, which cover nearly two-thirds of the world’s ocean. The treaty entered into force in January, having passed the required threshold of 60 countries. Six months later, more than 90 nations have formally adopted the agreement, including Brazil, China, France and Japan.A new species of monkey has been discovered in the forests of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. First reported in 2008, the ‘unusual-looking’ monkey has black fur and striking pinkish-orange lips. ‘Discovering’ a species, in this context, means officially recording and confirming it is genetically distinct from other species. Local people already knew of the monkey and refer to it by a common name, Likweli.The recently published ‘Sustainable Development Goals Report 2026’ shows that 36% of targets are on track or making moderate progress. Since 2015:
Approximately 1 billion people have gained access to safely managed drinking water;
Electricity access reached 92% of the world’s population, with one-third supplied by renewable energy sources; and
Global internet access increased from 40% to 74% of the population.

With record-breaking temperatures across the UK and Europe, it can be hard to think of anything else. 🌡️🌎 But there is lots to celebrate, like the Alsama Project in Lebanon winning the Global Schools Prize. Grab a cold drink & read June's good news stories. 🧊🥤👉 #StrategicCommunications #SDGs
Lebanon’s Alsama Project has won the inaugural Global Schools Prize at the Education World Forum in London for being one of the country’s few education providers to maintain daily teaching throughout the 2024 and 2026 conflicts. It operates education centres in refugee camps serving more than 1,100 displaced teenagers excluded from traditional schooling.Papua New Guinea has announced a new Marine Protected Area (MPA) measuring approximately 200,000 km² – roughly the same size as the UK.
Papua New Guinea is a biodiversity hotspot, and establishing the Western Manus MPA will protect the waters from fishing and other destructive human activity.A new study has shown that, since 2010, the world has been gaining more mangroves than it has been losing – driven by stronger legal protections and increased public awareness of their importance.
The world’s coastal mangrove forests protect millions of people from storms and store up to five times more carbon dioxide than land-based forests.Global access to electricity is improving. The Tracking SDG 7: The Energy Progress Report 2025 finds that almost 92% of the world’s population now has basic access to electricity, up from 87% in 2010. However, there is still a lot of work to be done. Over 666 million people remain without access, indicating that the current rate of electrification is insufficient to reach universal access by 2030.

Falling #deforestation rates in Brazil and the reduction of global temperature projections: this month’s positive news stories remind us that progress is possible. 🌍 May also marked Sir David Attenborough’s 100th birthday. 🥳 Read more. ⬇️ #StorytellingForChange #Attenborough #GreenGrowth #IPCC
Sir David Attenborough celebrated his 100th birthday on 8 May 2026 – a huge milestone in his remarkable life as one of the world’s most celebrated [SCR1.1]naturalists. His films and storytelling have inspired millions of people around the world to care for the environment, influenced generations of conservationists and driven global policy shifts on issues ranging from plastic pollution to climate change. Happy birthday Sir David.Many cities have embraced green growth – where increased productivity, reduced poverty and well-being are achieved with reduced environmental impact – and zero emissions. A new study tracking nitrogen dioxide emissions and gross domestic product across almost 2,500 cities found that in 80% of those studied, economic growth is no longer linked to increased fossil fuel emissions.Brazil’s Atlantic forest – the country’s most threatened biome – recorded its lowest level of deforestation last year since monitoring began 40 years ago. Two new data sets from different satellite monitoring systems show a 40% and 28% drop in deforestation from 2024 to 2025. Deforestation levels are still high, and several potential risks could reverse the downward trend of recent years, but the data looks promising.With an increasing availability of cost-effective solar and wind energy, and climate policies driving down emissions, climate scientists have revised the worst-case projections for global temperature rise. The previously projected upper limit of the worst-case scenario – a 4.5°C rise by 2100 – has been reduced to 3.5°C above pre-industrial levels. The finding will feed into the UN’s future Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change assessments.

From ocean protection in Chile to a people-led solar revolution in Pakistan, this month’s positive news stories show what’s possible with innovation and community action. 🌍 👉 Swipe through for more #StorytellingForChange #SocialImpact
Chile has reinforced its position as a global leader in ocean conservation, surpassing 50% protection of its marine waters. Once new protections for 360,000 km² of ocean around the Juan Fernández and Nazca-Desventuradas marine parks are implemented, this will bring the total ocean area fully protected by Chile to almost one million km².Every day, over 3,000 people die from tuberculosis (TB), but new transformative, rapid diagnostic tools will help save lives, reduce transmission and cut costs. WHO urges the accelerated rollout of these tools, alongside strengthening people-centred TB care and building resilient health systems. Every dollar spent combating TB generates up to $43 in health and economic returns.A fund conserving the watershed of the Tana – Kenya’s longest river – and improving farming methods is boosting livelihoods and water security. One interesting result shows a 41% decline in turbidity (cloudiness, indicating water quality), saving authorities £900,000 in water-treatment costs and showing how nature-based solutions can safeguard urban water systems against climate variability.A people-led solar revolution in Pakistan is helping ease the impact of the energy crisis and supporting a more energy-secure future. Electricity generated by solar in Pakistan has increased fivefold from December 2021 to 2025. Estimates from 2024 suggest solar provides about one-fifth of the country’s grid-supplied electricity.
