After the skinner box that was Dark Souls 2, I needed Fire Emblem Fortune's Weave. Getting some much needed downtime just poking around and exploring. That said don't do my beloved Fodlan like-- yeah okay fine.

Started reading Air by @gwillow.me and M.K. Perker on a whim. A couple issues in and it really is the antidote I needed to counteract 25 years of bad feelings about the world after 9/11.

Anyway I'm glad Marvel and no modern white dude writer was feckless enough to use Iraq as a proving ground for American heroism in some recent story-- oh fuck...

Ashur S. @screading.bsky.social · 08/09/2026

Honestly for as awful and horrifically racist 2000's Marvel was, I don't think an individual issue ever quite repulsed me as ASM #574 by Marc Guggenheim and Barry Kitson having the audacity to link Spider-Man's heroism to the Iraq War-- a genocidal war and reducing it to heroes v villains. Shameful.

Insurgents ambush Flash and link to the Juggernaut.

More of the same. Drugs turn you into Iron Spidey.

In terms of comics? New 52 Bruce Springsteen Superman. Live action. Tyler Hoechlin is the 🐐. Animated is MAWS Superman with Jack Quaid. All three are the trinity of the qualities that I love about Superman.

This bit in particular by @attackerman.bsky.social summarizes how I've always felt about any idea that post-9/11 islamophobia ever disappeared. It didn't. You're just seeing a ruling class that is too desperate to feign enlightenment.

Been reading the epic collection containing the beginning of Mark Gruenwald's Cap run (starts with Mike Carlin's), and I gotta agree Ed Brubaker was right to have the real Bucky kill Jack Monroe off. Why have the Diet Coke/Jason Todd version when you can have actual Coke/Dick Grayson Bucky.

Iconic Mary Jane Watson reading Faust after she sold her marriage to one of the many Marvel devils. (Marcos Martin really can sell an image.) #BrandNewDay

Finished The King (2019). Robert Pattinson's performance there (and hair) is going in his top 10 for my book.

Orion really does have the coolest mom. (Mister Miracle #8)

I sincerely do love Absolute Batman's take on the American state of mind that's taken hold since people like Alex Jones and Joe Rogan took to the cultural foreground. The idea that there's some sort of grand unified theory conspiracy that locks everything else into place when you're just losing it.

000

Ashur S. @screading.bsky.social · 14/08/2026

Your Name 10th going on the top of the heap.

010

Ashur S. @screading.bsky.social · 13/08/2026

Every time #AbsoluteBatman brings up Alfred is an operator and how much he loves his job, I keep half-expecting him to bring up his past with Chris Kyle and Eddie Gallagher. Certainly it'd make the punchline of his delusional belief that he's a good guy even better.

My favorite C-Lister is someone who for a brief moment in the 2010's looked like he was gonna go above and beyond.

Jimmy "Catch These Hands" Olsen is cooler than we ever calculated.

Highfather trying to rediscover the peaceful man he was after succumbing to Darkseid's baiting for a war (well to be fair his wife was killed) after everything else has been driven to death and destruction might be one of my favorite sequences in the overall Fourth World saga. (New Gods #7)

Was there *anyone* doing it like Kirby? (New Gods #7)

I don't think anybody has ever quite nailed sheer scale and drama in a kickoff the way Kirby had. (Forever People #7)

Jon Kent in season 3 of MAWS instead of Conner Kent in the Death of Superman homage?

Ashur S. @screading.bsky.social · 06/08/2026

@charlessoule.bsky.social writing Eddie Brock: Carnage forever would have been my preferred outcome, but Eddie trying to pretend he's still a good person in Queen in Black: Venom Unchained works nicely for me too. Love the hunky serial killer dad.

Ashur S. @screading.bsky.social · 05/08/2026

To give a freebie. Overall probably Bleeding Hearts by @denizcamp.bsky.social, @stipanmorian.bsky.social, and @matthollingsworth.com. Genuinely one of my favorite takes on zombies as an idea and at a pretty (sadly) good time for it.

I can't get over how funny this Marvel Unlimited ad is.

000

Ashur S. @screading.bsky.social · 05/08/2026

Okay for real. Sophie Campbell's Supergirl aside? MAWS's version of Supergirl is the GOAT.

000

Ashur S. @screading.bsky.social · 05/08/2026

I love this comic so much folks. Makes me hope we get a complete collection for Ostrander/Mandrake Martian Manhunter.

The Spectre getting some knowledge about his past.

010

Ashur S. @screading.bsky.social · 02/08/2026

Reading the Spectre by John Ostrander and Tom Mandrake always comes with a horrifying surprise you can't help but be impressed by. Especially with its interrogations of Jim Corrigan's maniacal fire and brimstone upbringing mixed with his hanging judge style of policing when he was alive.

He really just went and said it. Jesus Peter.

We need more Fantastic Four writers willing to go weird with Reed. Ryan North really got me with this.

You can't ring the dinner bell any harder for me than "Chris Bachalo draws Spider-Man and Wolverine". #BrandNewDay

020

Ashur S. @screading.bsky.social · 31/07/2026

This bit made me crack up. The Odyssey as films go felt more like "At the Mountains of Madness" than Lord of the Rings. The world is a decaying ruin where everything is out to kill you and its your fault, not a natural wonder worth defending.

020

Ashur S. @screading.bsky.social · 30/07/2026

I wouldn't call Zohran "worthless" when I dress like a guy who's been unemployed by choice since 2008, and volunteers as a bridge troll.

This week's comics are a pretty good haul.... Lookiny forward to diving in. 1/2

I don't know how you watch the entire third act of the movie and come to this conclusion.

Reading The Spectre and man what a thesis statement...

010

Ashur S. @screading.bsky.social · 29/07/2026

MAWS Supergirl really might be my favorite adaptation of Supergirl in quite some time.

030

Ashur S. @screading.bsky.social · 29/07/2026

Never seen what Ross Douthat looked like before. Is he supposed to look like a Klingon who flunked out? That said man, this is garbage finding its level. Douthat leaving one make work gig for another is about right for where this country is headed.

About to start the comic where God's vengeance will end your life and condemn you to eternity as a traffic light for jaywalking.

Reading Dracula vol 2 by Matt Wagner, Kelley Jones, and Jose Villarrubia. It has the goods.

JLI finding an excuse to work in the then-current status quo of JMD's Doctor Fate book really paid off some humor dividends here.

Wally being the equivalent to Guy in JLE is so funny considering how much his character has diverged over the last few decades.
