It's fine because rural locations can use mobile data for their internet, apart from the fact that even without masked lunatics trying to destroy the masts, data coverage is absolutely terrible in rural areas and also anywhere busy.

Apparently we are a serious country with aspirations of remaining relevant.

I have city centre locations where the cheapest option from next year is £100 per month for a dedicated line. And anywhere rural doesn't even have that. I've just checked our business postcode in BS1 and uh, yeah, Openreach are "building in this area now". So, nope.

Also they really actually are going ahead with this analogue phone network switch off in January despite the fact that huge numbers of individuals and businesses still don't have access to another network.

Just been on a 6-person teams meeting to discuss the ins and outs of how we are supposed to get an internet connection into one of our new shops (which opened weeks ago) if anyone wants to know how the modern world is planning out.

Hi, we don't, sorry! We don't really have space for drums and we mostly do acoustic stuff. I don't know a lot about them.

The previous "boiler upgrade scheme" which we qualified for seemed to be for a new gas boiler but I didn't pursue it and now I think you can only get a grant for a heat pump. But yes I am conscious the one I have will eventually need replacing especially if I don't get the system flushed for £1000.

That's really helpful thank you I will look into that

Nicola @scrapegroat.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
Ah yeah. I went over it with a different company before on the earlier scheme but I didn't trust them and found them really pushy so I gave up. I think the way to go is probably via a company that's definitely reputable so you know what you're getting.

Check the info on the actual gov.uk website first www.gov.uk/apply-boiler...

There's a refundable £200 deposit for that so I'm thinking about it. Thank you

House is 1960, insulation isn't terrible (damp is always an issue) but I am sure it could be better.

Octopus quote £4249 plus the grant for heat pump and new hot water tank. I have £0 and the monthly saving wouldn't cover the monthly cost of financing the £4249 over 10 years. Plus it'd be a debt.

Nicola @scrapegroat.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
Has anyone used the govt scheme to get a heat pump from Octopus? Any thoughts/ advice on this? My gas boiler is over 20 years old, the water in the system is black and I've just been quoted £1000 to clean it. House is elegable for the grant. Heating / hw costs me an avg of £36 p/m for the last 12.

There's also a (sort of) new musical instrument shop in Birmingham too. Hobgoblin Music has returned home from exile (along the road and apparently on another planet). We're back where we belong at 4 Priory Queensway, B4 6BS
