One of the biggest barriers to dealing with any social/interpersonal problem is confusing a behavior problem (what people do) for a knowledge problem. Knowledge problems are more straightforward to solve. So everyone redefines the problem as that. Plus it helps the well-educated feel superior.

Coincidentally, on reflection, I think this was the moment where I became disillusioned with activism and politics, which is a sadness I wish I could heal one day.

I considered starting dating again and then I remembered how after I broke up with one ex, their friends started a social media campaign which included someone anonymously messaging me to say (paraphrased) "your ex fiancé said it was your fault they strangled you" and I think single is still good eh

I think that restricting access to ADHD medication is silly. Imagine AF8. We talk about the biggest hazard in an emergency being people... now imagine people with suddenly unmedicated ADHD who had no ability to get an emergency supply.

They're both very clever. We unfortunately had quite a violent incident yesterday at school triggered by an incident with a toy one of them smuggled in their undies, so, the rule is pretty important at the moment.

I have to check the kids' clothes every day for smuggled contraband (toys they're trying to take to school). My girl didn't wanna unclamp her arms from her side.. as I had her lift them, out rained an army of tiny yellow ducks. Just quackers.

Great reporting in The Post on the 'softened' school sick-day guidance. Reports how Health NZ did not assess the risks. Now, hospitals are cancelling surgeries while late-winter flu surges. Prioritising bums on seats over public health has consequences. 1/4 www.thepost.co.nz/politics/361...

Seymour called for softer rules for sick days without health risks being assessed
Associate Health Minister David Seymour’s call for language around sick days to be softened to boost attendance was done without assessing the health impacts.

This week I am proud of myself for sorting heaps of the stuff we don't need. Getting rid of it will be the next hard thing. I held on to boxes of kids' toys in case we'd need them. I've gotten it down to 1 plastic crate's worth. I did clothes this week too, including heaps of scary "perfect" stuff

The result of relaxing is the kids trashing everything and refusing to clean it up but at least they're starting from clear clean floors. I pushed past my limit yesterday to reduce the toy rotation to manage it better longer term.

My complaint was successful re: the kōtiro's support, our usual support worker has a back injury and is on ACC so they organised us actual cover. My other complaint about my own coverage wasn't and I'm still being declined for needs assessment. Next step is a complaint to DSS.

Happy Saturday! One of the kids just dramatically sighed and stated "I can't believe we have to be grownups now" because they made a huge mess on the kitchen table out of century eggs and have to clean it up themselves.

Regretfully, I was intending to clean and tidy my house today and I've been swept off my feet by a migraine and it's associated fatigue. It needs done so badly... I can't decide if I push through and crash tomorrow instead of go to work, or rest now. Both work and home are important.

They keep asking "does she need us today"... do they realise how hard it is to get NASC funding in the first place?! Of course we need them! Stings harder on a day I can't even get out of bed all that easily.

Exhausted and crashy... and our support worker is sick. Healthcare New Zealand have still failed after 6 weeks to organise an alternative plan for my kōtiro for when this happens, this is something like the 5th missed session in those 6 weeks.

Periodic reminder that *anticipation* of mistreatment is just as much a barrier to seeking healthcare as actual experiences of mistreatment. When people avoid healthcare to protect themselves they miss out on both preventive medicine & also the therapeutic relationship that might address those fears

There’s been a lot of talk about children this past week - how to punish them, how to breed them, and how business people are like them - but none of it about child welfare. My #cartoon today #NZpol
Cartoon. Title: “Children” 3 frames. 1st frame Act candidate Paul Henry says, “And then teachers can deal to the little shits!” while ACT leader David Seymour looks on adoringly, with pink love hearts coming off him. 2nd frame, NZ First leader Winston Peters says “And I’ll give you big $$$s to have more of the little shits!” Underneath it says “Offer open to genuine certified Kiwis only” Shane Jones looks on adoringly, with pink love hearts coming off him. 3rd frame, PM Christopher Luxon looking ill, says “Shit, shit, shit!” while Nicola Willis looks on anxiously as a pink love heart breaks over her head.

Point taken Andrew, but my study of the Hansard from 2024 onwards is a clear record of how Winston Peters, far more than any other MP, is responsible for the decline in the standards of the House, which ironically he so often decries. The Speaker appears to be complicit in enabling this. #nzpol

The whāngai kid I'm attending school with until he has teacher aide funding hit a kid on his *first day* because his amygdala responds for him when someone bumps into him. A professional 1:1 TA that is fully funded would help but he is in that gap between RTLB and ORS... because he is verbal.

All these autistic people going to Telehealth because we genuinely have disability barriers and financial barriers to accessing diagnosis and they pull this!! I asked the kōtiro's paeds ASD navigator and she said she knew about it for kids since the diagnosis for them is observational but not adults

I could wax lyrical about the unjust access to qualifying documents, the financial burden this places on people who may be struggling to get by, the challenges inherent to the condition that can make getting out of the house for assessment challenging. But personally it's just shit. I'm sick of it.

Scout @scoutriver.bsky.social · 23/07/2026
So apparently you are unable to access a needs assessment if your qualifying condition was diagnosed via telehealth, which means that even though I just paid $700 for the only form of diagnosis I could afford and access, and even through it found me to be autistic, I cannot get help.

Listening to radio is going to become a lifeline when we don't have internet. The AM frequencies can travel quite far compared to FM. The first thing I did was turn on the radio after the quake for info and RNZ gave clear updates. Redundancy is important! And Internet can't be our only source.
