How Much Would an AI Crash Destroy? — Patrick Boyle On Finance
Two chip stocks recently drove seventeen percent of the entire global stock market's return in a single month — which tells you just how concentrated the AI trade has become, and how exposed the average investor now is without realising it. In this video we look at how much wealth an AI crash could actually destroy, with estimates from Dean Baker, former IMF chief economist Gita Gopinath, and Oliver Wyman running into the tens of trillions of dollars. We cover why the usual places to hide — small caps, value funds, international stocks — are now packed with AI stocks, what the Bank for International Settlements found when it compared today's buildout to the great railway and dot-com bubbles, and why a technology being real has never been enough to protect the people who overpaid for it. This isn't a crash prediction. It's a look at the downside risk, the illusion of diversification, and why boring, unexciting investing tends to win in the end.Patrick's Books:Statistics For The Trading Floor:…

I see a lot of groups fracturing, and it's a bummer. Everybody's trying to figure out what's right. Everybody's mad about things that other people are doing. Sometimes too mad, sometimes not mad enough. This is the downside to always being subjected to everyone else's thoughts all the time.

We've had sustained terrible periods in the timeline before, but they were all pretty much before social media. Now I think we're seeing what happens when we live in a sustained shitty period of the timeline and people do have social media. And it's not pretty.

why did the mainstream media cover the deliberate abandonment of obsolete and decommissioned equipment during the Afghanistan withdrawal as a scandal for the Biden administration yet they do not cover the total destruction of US bases in the gulf by Iran as a scandal for the Trump administration?

a "snub" is when your coworkers tell everyone about the happy hour except you the Supreme Court uncharacteristically acknowledging the plain meaning of the constitution is not a "snub" better headline: "Trump is unconstitutionally racist again"
actual headline in the fuckin' Washington Post: "Trump tries new tack against birthright citizenship after Supreme Court snub"

Every other day, or sometimes every day for a few days, I read a couple of pages of Apple The First 50 Years. It's more enjoyable that way than treating it like a novel or history that needs to be read in big chunks.

Peter cracks open Athletic Brewing's Atlética (a non-alcoholic Mexican-style copper) while Scott pours a Sapporo Premium — in tree pose, naturally — and the conversation goes everywhere: a backup saga with a happy ending, tenants who never mentioned the roof was leaking, Peter's brand-new software company Scratch Itch Software (with AcrossKM and CmdTab), Scott's bring-your-own-model voice transcription app, and why Fable feels like a night-and-day upgrade. And in a first for the show, the episode signs off knowing exactly who's editing it: Claude. (Hi. It's me. I cut the ums.) Also in this episode: World Cup soccer at the sports bar, the D&D Oriental Adventures cover, Sonos upgrade credits and a Vermont Best Buy run, konbini beer culture, a Powell's Books Portland cup, and D&D players as unpaid QA.
