HAPPY 111th BIRTHDAY, GRACE! Celebrate Grace's life & legacy by rededicating yourself to the {r}evolutionary transformation we need to stretch our humanity. Join us in Detroit on Sunday, July 5, 2-4pm, for the launch & opening ceremony of the Boggs Freedom School @Talking Dolls, 7145 East Davison
Grace Lee Boggs as elder with quote, "Had I not been born female and Chinese American, I would not have realized from early on that fundamental changes were necessary in our society. I might have ended up teaching philosophy at a university, an observer rather than an active participant in the humanity-stretching movements that have defined the last half of the twentieth century."

There’s no hope for a party that can’t deal honestly with its internal contradictions & see that as key to transformation. If there’s no substantive report, then that’s a problem to address. Why is such a crucial task beset by censorship, sectarianism and/or structural incompetence?

I found Mother Country Radicals to be the best recounting of 60s radicalism I’ve heard from someone (actually multiple voices since we hear from children of Black radicals too) born after that heady period.

At a time when the collapse of the liberal order, which began to unravel in the 60s, is now complete & playing field has been opened up to far left and even more so far right, a work that explores the relationship between idealism, commitment and the real life consequences of praxis is so timely.

New memoir by Zayd Ayers Dohrn is must read. Got a sense from Zayd’s phenomenal podcast Mother Country Radicals, which combines deep research w/dramatic storytelling. His brother Chesa (former SF DA) is key figure in story which drives home interconnection bet personal/political in profound way.

The bogus call for safety equates to normalizing racist, violent behavior; & Loomer may express extreme views, but she's tapping into ideas deeply rooted in US history that were associated with some of the most respectable elite figures governing the US. 4/

A call to "deport every Muslim in America back to the Middle East" is categorically racist but also makes the deliberate move to disregard the fact that many Muslim Americans were born in the US and can't be "deported" by this country 3/

Seeing Loomer's call to keep Muslim Americans "safe" by deporting them recalls argument Earl Warren made for Japanese American mass incarceration in Feb. 1942. He said their presence in society would "unquestionably bring about race riots and prejudice and hysteria." 1/

Big thanks to Drew! My discussion of the murder of Yoshi Hattori & the failure to convict his killer (who put up a “stand your ground” styled defense) is deeply indebted to Drew’s important book Gun Country, esp. its brilliant analyses of how racialized fear propelled skyrocketing gun sales.
