HAPPY 111th BIRTHDAY, GRACE! Celebrate Grace's life & legacy by rededicating yourself to the {r}evolutionary transformation we need to stretch our humanity. Join us in Detroit on Sunday, July 5, 2-4pm, for the launch & opening ceremony of the Boggs Freedom School @Talking Dolls, 7145 East Davison
Grace Lee Boggs as elder with quote, "Had I not been born female and Chinese American, I would not have realized from early on that fundamental changes were necessary in our society. I might have ended up teaching philosophy at a university, an observer rather than an active participant in the humanity-stretching movements that have defined the last half of the twentieth century."

Seeing Loomer's call to keep Muslim Americans "safe" by deporting them recalls argument Earl Warren made for Japanese American mass incarceration in Feb. 1942. He said their presence in society would "unquestionably bring about race riots and prejudice and hysteria." 1/

Big thanks to Drew! My discussion of the murder of Yoshi Hattori & the failure to convict his killer (who put up a “stand your ground” styled defense) is deeply indebted to Drew’s important book Gun Country, esp. its brilliant analyses of how racialized fear propelled skyrocketing gun sales.

General Curtis E. LeMay was the architect of the firebombing of Tokyo which killed 100,000 civilians in Japan on March 9-10, 1945. He boasted of burning down one-half of the city made up of wooden structures, leaving its residents "scorched and boiled and baked to death." 1/

I found this interview with Chavez biographer Miriam Pawel to be illuminating. While she was not previously aware of the sexual assaults, she argues that a red-baiting attack to oust Philip Vera Cruz was a glaring sign of abuse of power, among many others that were quickly swept under the rug. 1/
So when bad things happened — when the Filipino leader Philip Vera Cruz was brutally drummed out and accused of being a Communist spy, nobody said anything. There were a lot of people there who knew, but they didn’t speak up. And ever since, some people have wrestled with the questions of whether they should have.
So there were a lot of red flags. It was a politics of nonviolence. And then his cousin ran a “wet line” on the border that beat people up. But all of that to people was second to, “I’m not going to say anything.” And people didn’t say anything for decades.

Rachel Maddow's Burn Order podcast will bring unprecedented attention to the evils of Japanese American incarceration. But it's stuck in a liberal framework that sees "bad guys" undermining American democracy. Turns out I debunked this in a 1992 grad school paper for Prof. Mari Matsuda.
Problems with the Good Guys vs. Bad Guys Theory

The scapegoating of DeWitt also plays into the good guys vs. bad guys theory of causal interpretation. By this notion, bad guys like DeWitt and those at the War Department prevailed over concerned good guy liberals like Ennis and others at the Justice Department. Moreover, the good guy Supreme Court members, whose job it is to impartially uphold justice, were deceived by the bad guys at the War Department. This theory is also disturbing. As the historical record shows, there were few examples of a liberal or humanistic view towards Japanese Americans in the federal government and no examples of that view prevailing to shape government policy. After many failed arguments, even the government lawyers argued that the Supreme Court was not deceived by the War Department but acted as an accomplice to validate the “military necessity” position!
