This midwesterner cannot get enough of the New England salt marshes. #capecod

“Where do you think you’re going?” now on view at the Rhode Island Watercolor Society through November 6, 2026
Where do you think you're going? This small 8x8" (12x12" framed) watercolor depicts one of my favorite views on Cape Cod. When I can, I wander down the street each morning and evening to see what the changing light brings - and it is different every single time. It's part of the Rhode Island Watercolor Society's "Seasons" exhibit on view until November 6. The Society is open Thursdays and Fridays 10am - 4pm and Saturdays 10am - 3pm. As I've noted before, the Society is located in a lovely area of Pawtucket, RI, that is especially beautiful this time of year.

“The Golden Hour” on view through October 20 at the Sandwich Arts Alliance’s Fall for Art Exhibit
The Golden Hour The Sandwich, MA, boardwalk is one of my favorite salt marshes. Whenever people come to visit, we try to make time to visit the boardwalk. This painting, now on view at the Sandwich Arts Alliance, captures the October light I love so much. Salt marshes leave the Midwesterner in me dumbfounded with delight - they are different every time you look at them. On the shore the tides move in and out pretty much the same way no matter where you are, but the marshes give you not just the blues and purples of the water, but extraordinary greens, pinks and oranges and their reflections. Sandwich salt marsh, July 2026 The Arts Alliance is in the historic old Sandwich Town Hall, and open Tuesday - Saturday, 11-4.

“Nothing Like the Sun” accepted to the New England Watercolor Society Associate Members Show, on view through November 4, 2026
This is a recent favorite and it's included with a lot of beautiful work by NEWS members at the Plymouth Center for the Arts in Plymouth, MA. Nothing Like the Sun, 2026 Inspired by my 2025 visit to France, I feel like I finally captured a bit of the light and heat of those wonderful days at Clos Mirabel in the French Pyrenees. Autumn is a great time to visit the Watercolor Society's dedicated space at the Center because there's so much to see there and in historic Plymouth. If you haven't seen Plymouth Rock yet, New Englanders are endlessly amused by the giant monument that protects the diminutive rock.

“Violet Boulevard” wins an honorable mention in the Cape Cod Art Center’s Purple Exhibition
Violet Boulevard, 2025 This is a fun way to close out the summer. As a newly minted juried member of the Cape Cod Art Center, it's gratifying to be recognized for this whimsical piece. The Purple Exhibition is on view Monday through Friday 9am-4pm, through Friday, September 11, 2026. Thanks to Cindy Vallino, the Juror for this competition.

“Fairview View” accepted to the Sandwich Arts Alliance’s annual June Kershaw juried exhibit August 5 – September 8, 2026.
The Sandwich Arts Alliance's June Kershaw exhibit is a great showcase for Cape Cod artists, and I am honored to be included again this year. The Alliance's gallery and classrooms are located in the historical old Sandwich Town Hall, which has recently been renovated and restored - this exhibit is part of its grand re-opening. Located near the Sandwich Glass Museum (where they have daily glass blowing demonstrations) Heritage Museum and Gardens (which has antique cars and a vintage indoor carousel) and a very walkable Main Street, it is definitely worth a day trip if you are vacationing on the Cape.

Looks like there will be some rain coming to the Cape this week - why not take in some art when you're not at the beach? There's lots to see at the Cape Cod Art Center in Barnstable, and if you're on the Cape full-time or just for the summer, the Center offers some great classes for all ages. This juried exhibit, which runs until August 14, 2026, has some great work from artist on the Cape and beyond, and I'm honored to be included.

"May Altar" is one of a series of paintings I did as part of an art class this past winter. I usually have a rosary in my pocket and decided to see where the beads would lead. This piece is on view as part of the Umbrella Arts Center's summer student exhibit on view in Concord, MA through August 30.

“May Altar” included in the Umbrella Arts Student Show, A Moment of Reflection, now through August 30, 2026
I owe so much to the Umbrella Arts Center in Concord, Massachusetts, for the opportunities they've provided to me and countless other artists, giving us a chance to pursue art instruction from an incredibly gifted group of instructors whose work inspires us every day. I've studied under Kat O'Connor on and off since 2017, when I took my first watercolor class at the Umbrella thinking it might help me help Walt expand his art to include painting. It turned out that I was the one who expanded my art horizon under Kat's steady guidance.

“Windy Day at Wood Neck” now on view at the New England Watercolor Society’s Celebrating New England show at the Plymouth Center for the Arts, July 10 – September 2, 2026
Windy Day at Wood Neck The New England Watercolor Society's summer show is all about all things New England, so I'm especially pleased to be showing this painting of Wood Neck Beach in Falmouth, Massachusetts. The Plymouth Center for the Arts has gallery devoted to the watercolor society and is a lovely place to visit anytime, but particularly now as we celebrate this historic 250th year of American Independence - and the weather is sublime. The exhibit runs through September 2, 2026. The Center is open Wednesday through Saturday from 10am - 4pm and Sundays 1pm - 4pm.

“Coastal Chaos” and “Then There’s the Wildness” on view now at the Rhode Island Watercolor Society Making Your Mark online Exhibit
Coast Chaos, Watercolor + ink on paper, 2026 Then There's the Wildness, Watercolor on paper, 2026 The Rhode Island Watercolor Society warms up the winter months by hosting online juried shows and I'm so glad to be included in this exhibit, Making Your Mark. Mark making is the use of lines, dots or other patterns as part of creating an image. It can be cross hatching or strokes of paint or ink - for me, sometimes it's a struggle to assure that the marks don't overwhelm the composition. The process itself is so satisfying to me that sometimes I have to leave a piece for days or weeks and come back to it to see if it's successful or work on it some more (or pitch it). You can view the full exhibit at the link above or see it on Facebook. Viewable until March 27, 2026.
