I did my master's in Finland and the swords are for defending knowledge! There was a ceremonial sword sharpening at my uni after which the master's students added stones to a sauna of knowledge for the graduating PhDs. Absolutely tremendous place.

EXTREME MOLLIFICATION
A watercolour painting of a jellyfish in shades of green. There is a thin green halo around the top (bell) of the jellyfishThe same jellyfish painting with copper leaf applied to the halo and one of the tentaclesThe same painting with the excess copper leaf swept away. The copper leaf halo and tentacle are SUPER shiny

Big time! And same - a fellow cook and knitter here! I'm surprised at how fun and relaxing I'm finding the painting. My sister bullied me into it (she's a wonderful artist) and is aggressively supportive of me learning new techniques AND fucking them up. Would that everyone had such a mentor!

SLIGHT MOLLIFICATION
Another ocean wave gradient watercolour, this one has a lot more green. Instead of copper leaf, I've added a bunch of gold ink pen-strokes

[sigh]
A small watercolour painting of ocean waves. The painting is on a gradient from a veridian/turquoise mix to indigo with a light indigo sky. Waves are painted over the gradient using the same colours, but more saturated. I like how it turned out! It looks like waves! The same painting as before, but with thick, wibbly lines of copper leaf down the middle. I really like how the copper looks with the paint colours, but I haven't yet gotten the hang of applying thin lines of leaf. Perhaps no one can. Perhaps I AM a gilding prodigy and it is impossible!

A page from a sketchbook with three watercolour peaches titled 'PEACHES'. All three show a ripe peach (from my friends' friend's parents' garden!) painted with a different technique: 'paint what I see', 'many light glazings', and 'contrasting under-painting'

Have you read his memoir? He talks a lot about the various Rocky Horror times in his life, how his theatre training led him to develop the voice and the character - it's a really, really good read. Also, a forever babe!
