I love Northern Australia, and it breaks my heart what's happening and is planned for this region. More people need to know why this place is so special and what's at risk, so I wrote about it. My first article for @australiainstitute.org.au's The Point. thepoint.com.au/opinions/251...

Northern Australia is extraordinary, and it’s under severe threat
Right now, this region, is under siege, in large part due to insatiable corporate and government desires to ‘develop’ the North.

🎧 If you haven't listened to our latest episode, what are you waiting for? With a combined nearly 100 years of experience communicating about science with different audiences, we had a lot of fun sharing our #scicomm high and low experience. 🔥 We'd love you to listen and share pod.fo/e/28ebff
The text on this image says New Episode Out Now: Our Scicomm Highs and Lows. In the centre of the image is a photo of 5 people with a glass window and wind chime behind them. From left to right are a tall man (Michael) with dark brown short hair and wearing a pale blue shirt. Next to him is Linden - a woman with long straight brown hair, wearing a bright orange jumper. Next to Linden is Jen with shoulder length pale brown hair and wearing a blue denim jacket and black pants. To the right of Jen is a woman, Catriona, wearing a dark blue and white patterned dress and glasses. Her long dark hair is tied back. On the far right is Graham, a tall man with gray hair is wearing a brick red jumper and blue jeans.

Everyone is smiling and Jen is holding a white picture frame with a cartoon of 5 penguins. If you look closely, the cartoon penguins each have distinguishing features to suggest that each one of the penguins represents one of the people in the photo and the five people are standing in the same order as their caricature penguin. This cartoon was a gift to Jen for her 50th birthday from the rest of the teaching team and the photo was taken at her 50th birthday party.

The rest of the image is light blue, pink, dark blue and yellow geometric shapes. At the bottom left is the Let’s Talk SciComm logo.

Golden orb weaver blessings for your weekend! 🕸️🌏 This species is Trichonephila edulis, and it's a sure sign of summer when their beautiful huge webs appear. Once a female has made her web she's pretty much stationary for months, so you can really get to know the girls in your neighborhood! #wildoz
A female Australian golden orbweaver spider sits in her web next to some debris she has collected to act as a "distraction" to predators - the debris can also contain her larder of captured insects saved for later meals. The spider has a light grey abdomen and white, slightly fuzzy cephalothorax with black dots. Her reddish-brown legs have a series of fuzzy black "brushes" around each of the main joints.
