NEW: Remember when John Oliver opened a church to expose how easy it was to get tax exemptions? This year, ProPublica reporters set out to establish private schools to test if, truly, anyone could open one. We founded two. Here’s how.

How ProPublica Reporters Became Private School Owners in 24 Hours
The reporting experiment demonstrates how easy it can be to open private schools that might then access public money. No credentials or background checks required.

did you know that we get the word "cockamamie" from a bastardization of a term ("decalcomania") for a period in the 1930s after temporary tattoos were invented by the French and kids were running around putting them on fucking everything?! 🐦🐦🐦

the phenomenon of conference and journal spam never cease to be a source of glee in an otherwise dark world: "It would be an honor for us if you could shower your presence as speaker at our conference."

yes any place that publishes squibs count, but there aren't enough of them, and as a result they're much too competitive

well there's another interpretation, which is that 90% of publications in medicine are fingers instead of hands, while there is really no venue for publishing fingers in semantics/philosophy. your point certainly hits for major medical contributions but I expect those are pretty hard to publish, too

same with earning a co-authorship: after we wrote the article one of my guys said "Why don't we send it to (famous old dude), see what he thinks?" and he responded positively with a long, incoherent personal anecdote and so my collaborators were like "Great! Let's add him as a co-author."

there's literally already so many insane administrative decisions--like arming UCPD with military-grade weapons that even the LAPD aren't allowed to use--that this one will likely go through. we're just too exhausted

I ran into a "doubt if" in the wild and it threw me off! I think I have all 3 in my dialect, but I don't have string intuitions about them. I think it's possible they have subtly different distributions...

Schnitza Fars @schnitzafars.bsky.social · 25/08/2026
I do think "doubt" behaves differently when negated, there's lots of evidence for that for all such verbs, so I had hoped to focus on the non-negated versions!

Schnitza Fars @schnitzafars.bsky.social · 25/08/2026
yeah sigh I guess you're right, it's not a rogative verb like "wonder", it seems to somehow require a proposition. I'll hafta dive back into that lit (or get @i-rohl.bsky.social involved again lol) but mainly curious if there's any perceptible difference between "doubt whether" and "doubt if"!
