Alternatively you could change which slot the gpu is plugged into. Would rec trying various games, demanding and light. Then switching the slot and trying again. If your gpu numbers are good id guess psu "best" case scenario. If you have access to another psu could switch it out to check as well.

Sounds like it might be psu or mb related aside from checking to see if all the wires are plugged in securely. If everything is solid in place try to recreate it w whatever games were playing when it'd happen. If not causing overheating it might be a wire seating/mounting issue or dying psu.
