And www.is.fi/kotimaa/art-... "Venäjältä öljylasteja hakevat tankkerit odottavat Suomenlahdella pitkiäkin aikoja tietoa määränpäästään, kerrotaan Fintraficilta. Sunnuntaina laivaliikennettä Suomenlahdella oli paljon."

Also one or more of those two or three tankers getting into trouble in storm would be a good story, an excuse for something "unconventional" happening.

One thing is that the weather is getting pretty stormy on the Baltic Sea, especially tomorrow. (I have no idea whether this affects the ships or their timing, I'm a complete amateur there. But something like waiting for a day or two could make sense.)

More seriously, is that place somehow representative of anything? Is there a real trend? I've lately been surprised by the AI sentiment there.

But on a longer term (which I was thinking), meaning is hard to predict and the whole concept of work is questionable. Anyway, if complexity, cognition and autonomy grow on the tech side but not in our heads, and there's a clear boundary between, the current arrangement of power is unstable.

Janne Sinkkonen @scellus.bsky.social · 28/12/2024
Oh it was originally about meaningful work. That's complicated: meaning comes from contents of the work, one's local social environment (still ok sometimes), also from big stories (less ok maybe). I'd think effects of AI could even be positive for the content, at least in the short term. (1/2)

I think it more like our infrastructure gets intelligence, we gradually give up autonomy with respect to it, and the end result is us giving up control willingly. Think markets, social media algorithms, soon capable personal assistants. Competition between species is a bad metaphor.

Plausible deniability etc., and at this point I wouldn't yet say it's even that ship. But overall, quite likely yes imo, too many coincidences lately, incl. 25th Dec as the date.

What made o3 so much better than previous models on this benchmark?

I bet their looking for "root cause" in terms of functional imbalances and such would have obscured my underlying ABCG8 mutation even better than the conventional approach did. Just digging deeper would have been more beneficial. (A whole-genome test I ordered myself eventually did it.)

Opinions are all over the place but clustered. x.com/euxoa/status... On Bluesky: it's not healthy to isolate folks with clearly different priors, culture and epistemic environment to a separate site to make the media environments differentiate even more, but 🤷.

There's also the drift towards attention seeking, esp. in titles. NYT is still decent with its titles (and content too as far as I can tell), but in Finland at least, all media is now clickbait. Even the national broadcasting company (yle.fi) is mostly clickbait, and drifting to POV journalism.

I'm thinking media (NYT etc.), not experts. That media is seen now against the background of sea of "information" in internet and social media is a good point. It may indeed be that the mainstream media has always been a bit lost and biased, those imperfections are now just more visible. But...

o* models are nerdish, good for problems where there is a well-defined solution. Claude Sonnet (new) meanwhile has a distinct quality that I prefer for general use and for generic coding. It is sophisticated somehow, gets nuances and expresses them too.

Janne Sinkkonen @scellus.bsky.social · 22/12/2024
I think o3 proves the point of o* series beyond any doubt. But on that "naming scheme", 4, 4o, o1, o3, ... soon only "o4 (new)" and "4o (new)" are missing. ;) Arena is an unknown goal, we don't exactly know how biased the prompters are, but can well believe 4o is better for "general use" than o*.
110
Janne Sinkkonen @scellus.bsky.social · 22/12/2024
o1 is not on the Arena, and o1-mini and o1-preview are on top in math and coding as they are supposed to be. o* series doesn't give advantage on humanities-style non-reasoning problems where Claude Sonnet 3.5 (new) is probably still the best.

The motivation of mass blockers is probably not content curation. But even for curation, using the site without ever exposing yourself to not-followed is impossible and counterproductive from the point of view of exploration. Pretty much an unresolved problem and having many motives doesn't help.

In general the user level (as opposed to single posts or subnetworks) is just a poor heuristic. Hopefully we see lots of innovation around this.

Janne Sinkkonen @scellus.bsky.social · 10/12/2024
I have nothing against that habit or strategy, I just don't think it is an efficient way to curate what you see. There's way too many people posting too many things, from your viewpoint in a random fashion. Efficient blocking would be by AI and massive, way beyond blocking just followers.

For that problem you need an exclusive club not an open social media platform cloned to be a Twitter/X replacement. Or maybe Bluesky will do with enough semi-automatic blocking, who knows. (I think there's a huge overestimation of some correlations there too, but that's another matter.)

An open protocol, 24M users and counting. You may perceive a community around you, other people see other communities. Why not just let him be in his own corner while you are in yours with your friends? Space is not exactly a limitation "here", that "here" emerges when you interact with someone.

That ownership idea is a natural one and may work with a few hundreds of people, but I don't think it'll work on a social network site or on a protocol. You can take care of your own interactions and that's it. Blocking is an option, apparently I've been blocked by ≈60 accounts just by following!

Yes those terms are of course exaggerations, but the flavor of critique is around AI being hyped as offering much more now or in future than its reality warrants.

Then there's a lot of cultural or economically strategic opposition from "the emergent luddite class" as someone amusingly put it: often young people in creative professions suspicious of SV, tech bros, tech right, capitalism, pointing to copyright theft, bias or other kind of injustice, etc.

Who I stumble most often are people who don't either like current architectures or approaches (Gary Marcus, to a degree Yann LeCun, François Chollet, Rodney Brooks maybe), or oppose AI from a more political perspective: Timnit Gebru as a prime example.

Of course, it's just that even a cheap LLM would cost something for the volume of the whole site. Not a problem is costs are distributed across users, but there's no mechanism for that.

I think hockey stick refers to how warming since industrialization reflects against longer-term climate variability. That warming accelerates when CO2 etc. in the atmosphere still rise (plus some inertia in the system), is no surprise. The bump of the last years makes people curious though.

Didn't check the methodology well enough, but this is an interesting paper (via HN) saying LLMs learn reasoning heuristics, not answers. For math they draw on “procedural” data—methods and formulas—rather than retrieving solutions directly. arxiv.org/abs/2411.12580

It's more interesting what kind of art humans and AI will co-create. The phase of concentrating on mimics around a new capacity must be temporary.

They are getting really good for an amateur eye at least. But given people pay for human originality on places where substitutes are completely identical ("guitar of Elvis Presley"), I guess paying for mystical (or real) imperceivable humanness in art will be obvious.
