I did it. Draft 1 of the next book exists, which is something. 3 weeks to make it presentable now.

Just realised that tomorrow marks ten years since being published with my first book, Fir for Luck! I knew it was this month, but had to look up the date, and I nearly missed it. TEN!

Boom, just over 1500 words of the next book written. I love my notebook for The Secret Loch Ness Correspondent, a gift! I work best in the library, with no internet distraction and a sense of urgency. Where do others write?

Woman rushes into my book signing at Fort George today. Woman: I loved your book! Me (flattered): Oh, how kind. Which one? Woman: The... wait... oh, I've got it. The Bookseller... Me (helpfully): of Inverness? Woman: YES! That! Me: Erm, that's not one of mine. 😁 @shonamaclean.bsky.social

Happy birthday, #PearlSBuck! Her novel East Wind: West Wind was one of the very first adult books I read as a teenager. Books like this ensured I remained a reader as I moved away from the excellent children's books which still shape me.

Morning: Walked up Ormond Hill, site of Andrew de Moray's Castle, where the Northern Rising of 1297 started with people from NOSAS, the North of Scotland Archaeology Society. Evening: I did the same again with Avoch Cubs for their local history badge. I read from To War with Wallace on both walks.

I quite like video editing. I do most of the editing for the @timetunnellers.bsky.social now. Have finished a guest video, which will go out on their Youtube channel in the coming days, featuring this bottle, said to contain... A Witch. Can you think of a better writing prompt for kids?

A throwaway sentence in Bill Bryson's Shakespeare biography started it. A pesky little brother threatening the Bard's street credit in London? STORY GOLD!

Any other #Shakespeare fans here? I bought the picture just before starting my first teaching job. When @societyofauthors.bsky.social gave me a work-in-progress grant, I set to work on a kids' novel about Shakespeare's youngest brother. And now it's HERE! THANK YOU @luathpress.bsky.social!

Right! Convince me that Bluesky works! I am getting pretty low engagement, though I love how the platform looks/feels. I left Twitter for here, but I'm clearly not getting the hang of it. For info, I live in the Highlands of Scotland and write kids' books, mostly historical, and adult non-fiction.

As someone who has written about Mary Queen of Scots, I was so keen to see the @natlibscot exhibition of her last letter at @perthmuseum.bsky.social. Better still, they asked me to deliver school workshops about #MaryQueenofScots and #RobertBurns, and I got a look at the exhibition a day early! 😊
