Not long ago these points were a given - the most basic user-respecting stance. But today, they're practically revolutionary!

Screenshot from the Procreate web page on AI, stating:

"Where we stand

No generative AI
We deeply respect your hard-earned skills.

Your work belongs to you
We do not have access to your art, by design.

We take pride in privacy
Your activity is not tracked in our apps."

The two stripes image on the cover of Origin Complex is a (too subtle?) reference to the fact that this is the second book in the Steel Frame series/universe. If we were ever able to stock Steel Frame, I'd redo the cover in a similar style, but with a single stripe image to denote the first book. 😉

Orrrr you could just put the fries in the bag and read the books you want for free. Pay for it yourself if it soothes your conscience, but putting up barriers to reading accessibility is not the play, especially right now.

I went for a slightly different approach for the look of The Witches of Greasy Creek special edition ebook. Dark, foggy roads through woodlands. Avoiding the 'easy' path of Appalachian stereotypical images, and looking at the mystery, the threat of the murderer, while keeping it contemporary.

Photograph of a dark mountain road at night with conifer trees on either side. Vehicle headlights approach out of the fog, following the yellow lines down the middle of the road.

The latest from @edzitron.com on the Subprime AI Crisis. Well worth a read. Basically how the causes of the 2008 crash were never addressed, and are now being played out again like some shitty over-CGI'd film franchise reboot. But this time it's burning every creative industry on the way down.

The entire generative AI industry is based on unprofitable, unsustainable economics, rationalized and funded by venture capitalists and bankers speculating on the theoretical value of Large Language Model-based services. This naturally incentivized developers to price their subscriptions at rates that attracted users rather than reflecting the actual economics of the services.

Just on my way back from buying a bottle of wine in Millom for our Friday night, and came across an injured buzzard on the roadside. Had to turn around, pick it up and take it to the vets. It seemed mostly stunned. Vets were lovely, and will let it recover before trying a flight test.

You may have noticed this quote on the Scarlet Ferret homepage recently. No, I won't be stocking V for Vendetta, but I will be promoting the books I stock a little differently and a little more... aggressively Indie authors & publishers are struggling, and I believe that urgent activism is needed.

"Words offer the means to meaning, and for those who will listen, the enunciation of truth."
