Hi, I'm Neil, a Linux advocate and Linux-only gamer, from Scotland. I'm also a techie - 20 years in Networking, and 10 in Cyber Security, so basically I speak fluent TLA. I also occasionally dabble with programming (Python mainly) and retro gaming too.

Some really weird articles being posted about Deep Dish Dungeon, a recently launched dungeon puzzler on Steam. None of this article appears relevant. There's no gear durability, no dodge rolls, no "Iron Spatula Crank", no drawbridge. www.xmodhub.com/info/guides/...

I donate to Wikipedia, but I've seen its biases firsthand, especially towards women. This paper from 2021 is worth a read. "Specifically, my data indicate that biographies about women who meet Wikipedia’s criteria for inclusion are more likely to be considered non-notable than men’s."

Anything with a mod community will have inherent bias. Wikipedia is no different.

She's not trying to edit her own page, she's trying to have a page accepted in the first place. There's a justification you have to go through in order to have a page created on Wikipedia. They kept rejecting hers, until, finally, they couldn't ignore her any longer.

Wikipedia would likely just reject them. You can't just "submit a bio". Wikipedia demands that the person is "of sufficient note" and in many cases will reject female bio submissions while allowing male bios. Which is whole bias aspect of the article.

Yeah, I'm not delighted about Torvalds buckling to the LLM-pressure. I'll stay on Linux though, and try to minimise any other LLM influence. I haven't used Artcraft, so just bringing it to your attention. It wasn't a rec, by any means, sorry! If it's your livelihood though, maybe you'd try it.

There's the ArtCraft suite. Apparently a fairly mature developer has vibe-coded replacements (pretty much replicas) of the Adobe suite. No idea if they're any good, but I've seen a few folk boosting it recently. getartcraft.com Not a fan of AI though. Leaves a sour taste in my mouth.

I've never been a fan of the whole Year of the Linux Desktop thing - I've been on it since 2013. But it's true that there's a ton of software that will prevent you from coming over. Adobe, CSP, Ableton and more. So, yeah, the title is clickbait-y.

That's like forcing infrastructure specialists to use Windows for their containers or dev environment. No-one should do this. Clickbait for sure.

Clueless leadership again today. You wonder if they actually care about race results, given the gutless decision making.

Hamilton: I'm on Softs, a different strategy and faster than Leclerc. Engineer: Go slower. 🤔🙄 Vasseur doesn't have a clue. Lovely dude, but utterly gutless and completely out of his depth.

Telling him to back off on Softs to Leclerc's Mediums is the kind of gutless leadership Vasseur is now known for. Sure double-stacking might have been the best call later, but by then the damage was already done. Ferrari never cease to disappoint.

See now you're just being rude. I don't do that, and I don't appreciate being lumped together with people you personally find annoying. Saying "Linux people annoy me" is as valid and as fucking dumb as saying "Windows people annoy me". There's millions in both groups. Do better.

I'm on CachyOS and it's great because it's arch at its core, but the installer sets up integrated rollbacks to the boot menu, that auto-update when you issue any pacman command. Broken O/S? Just reboot, go to the "snaps" item in the boot menu and choose an older version of your O/S. It's great.

I've been a Linux enthusiast since Ubuntu in 2005, and fully Linux-only since 2013. I have absolutely no idea what most of the core filesystem is. I know there's settings in /etc. I know that some distros mount external disks in /mnt. The rest is mostly a mystery.

scaine.bsky.social @scaine.bsky.social · 10/10/2026
Haha, that's fine. I wasn't telling you what to do regarding the underlying filesystem. I was trying to point out that most folk don't need to care about it. And if you do want to poke about in there, you're probably technically-oriented.

Fair, but I disagree. Macs have made the home folder structure perfectly understandable (even though it's slightly different), and why would anyone go digging into / unless they're techy anyway? The core desktop experience is very familiar, at least on CachyOS with KDE Plasma.

If they're used to Win7 or XP, they'll love Linux. It won't be jarring at all. Not like Linux needs any terminal use these days, unless you're doing funky stuff. And that level of terminal use is still child's play compared to what folk are being asked to do to remove AI from Windows.

Can also recommend CachyOS, which integrates system rollbacks into the boot menu, so if something goes wrong, you can just snap back to when it was working. Still a bit techy though in places. I guess that's inevitable with Arch being the base. Very up to date though, as a result.

If you have an up-to-date Plasma, you can add the plasma-virtual-keyboard package, then add it in keyboard settings. This lets you hold down keys, like a mobile phone. A little pop-up will appear with the available diacritics. discuss.kde.org/t/this-week-...

It doesn't matter if you condone it or not. The genAI companies will take it anyway. Your opinions don't matter to them. Of course code and art are different, but attribution, compensation and the license under which both code and art is created is the same. Again, the companies don't care.

That's not going to be any kind of comfort to the tens of developers I know who lost their jobs as result of this unethical tech. Again, it's so strange to me that people can be opposed to artists having to change how genAI affects their output, but comfortable with devs going through the same.

Sure, if the coding license is honoured. But it's not. They grabbed millions of lines of GPL code and shoved it in there. No copyleft was honoured. No share and share-alike. No "must not be used for commercial purposes". That £200/month Claude license was built on "protected" code.

I'm my experience LLMs are absolutely replacing the developers, at least in enterprises. So it's weird to me that people are cool with vibe-coding. Oh, it's just a tool to speed things up? No, CEOs see bogus stats like "43% efficiency" and they will absolutely fire 43% of the workforce.

scaine.bsky.social @scaine.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
Curious why coding gets a pass? I see this all the time - people want to protect artists, but developers are thrown under the bus. LLMs can code for the same reason that they can create pictures - they've stolen billions of lines of code to learn, with no attribution or compensation.

Linux peeps have *opinions* on things like Flatpak. My best advice (and I acknowledge the irony, given that I'm a Linux peep...) is to try/use whatever gets the software installed. Then, *you* can decide if it's an issue. Some people get very upset about snaps. But Flatpak? Generally solid.

Well, honestly, they probably tell you that because it's their experience? I get your point though - some distros will struggle to install certain apps/software, which can definitely be frustrating. Maybe they just use Flatpak to get around that.
