Two more from my Scotland trip. Bass Rock makes another appearance in the first from N. Berwick, not to be confused with Berwick on Tweed, the location of the 2nd. It depicts the old Berwick bridge, dating to 1611. This and other work can be seen on my website: www.jamesgloria.com/exhibitions

Always special when you 'discover' an artist you've never heard of who completely knocks you out and inspires. Joan Eardley was a plein air painter who braved the elements of the east coast near Aberdeen on the N. Sea in a small fishing village.

View from Siccar Point on the 'Deep Time Trail", my one foray using oils in Scotland. I had brought a few colors to seewhether they'd pass the TSA, they got through after some confused examination. Watercolor's simplicity ended up being a better fit for touring. 5" x 7" on watercolor paper.

Another from my trip to Scotland. We toured the ruins of Tantallon Castle, and this view of Bass Rock framed in the distance caught my interest. Mid painting, it began to drizzle. Not good for watercolors in general, but in this case I liked the effect it created. 7" x 11".

Scotland, Day 2: Another view from our friend's place. I could sit there for hours, watching the sky. Rainbows almost daily. Sea and clouds ever changing. This one is 7" x 11".

Made a trip to Scotland to spend time with friends and be a tourist. Brought oils, but also watercolors (the oils passed TSA). Couldn't carry panels, so WC paper for both. Ended up just using WC. Day 1: the view from our friend's lr window: 1000 or so sheep, then the North Sea. 4" x 6".

Spent the day with Art Association of Harrisburg participating in their Plein Air event along the Susquehanna. Weather couldn't decide whether to be overcast, rain or partly cloudy. This one is 16" x 24", oil on linen on panel.

Our last day in Maine was spent in Portland. Clear day, perfect for taking the ferry around the islands. So, I switched to watercolor. First the ferry, before we board: 4"x6"

Harpswell Maine #4: "Harpswell Dock". Last of the oils. Typical Maine coastal weather: overcast through 2 hrs. Then gradual clearing over the next 2. Finally I finished just as fog crept in and obscured the entire view.

Richter: To talk about painting is not only difficult but perhaps pointless. You can only express in words what words are capable of expressing. What language can communicate, painting has nothing to do with. What were you thinking of?You can’t think of anything, painting is another form of thinking

Never get tired of seeing Ange's dance pics. This is her duet from "Lovers" from a 1983 performance (with Lane Sayles) Keith Jarrett recorded the original music while viewing a rehearsal video, in one take.

Trip to Woodstown, Nj for an inaugural plein air event. No prizes alas, but a good visit. Met some artists and locals, interesting town. But I forgot to bring my prepared panels and had to use store-bought. Too slick, under-painting doesn't soak in.. a totally different experience.

Just submitted my "NY Harbor Liberty/Ellis Island" Plein Air Oil, 9"x 12" (2024) for the 530 Main "America as we see it" show opening July 11. It was completed during a week in NY when Ange was coaching the Jennifer Muller/The Works dancers.

Just got a bottle of raw linseed oil. I'll 'wash' it with salt water and sand, refining it for painting. Meanwhile, I've been doing more prosaic oil painting...of our wood windows. I realized I could make my own paint for that as well. My impasto medium is almost identical to window glazing putty.

My latest, a 16" x 20" oil. It took a few days to complete, unlike my usual process of painting "alla prima" or all in one sitting. Which introduced the issue that flowers expand, and light changes when it rains, and at night...

Pic of the day "Dogwood" from 2016 flower series. Tip of the day: Draw without an eraser. It can be a crutch. If you want to be able to produce finished work for display, why not practice making confident lines. Besides, erasures are often a 'cure that's worse than the disease'

I've been posting work from a variety of media and styles lately, so I thought I'd comment that frequently artists, for 'branding' purposes are told to stick to one medium, genre or even sub category of art making. It is important to explore thoroughly to go deeper, but it also can be limiting.
