I feel like this is the result of people being conditioned to value degree-requiring jobs, over trade or service work. Kids are told they need to succeed academically so they don’t turn out like those others, when the others are doing good and necessary work.

I was looking at a non-AI tech company recently that projected their future value at a number bigger than the market they were operating in (a mature market with lots of incumbents). Based on their funding, someone is believing them.

As someone in Toronto, I reserve the right to tease Alberta (as they do to us) but they use their trucks. Alberta is often the destination for folks from other provinces that don’t have as much opportunity. They do dirty dangerous jobs for good pay.

I used to look at the big companies as the training ground but things are definitely not the same anymore. Also, agreed. I can’t teach someone to be passionate and curious, but I CAN teach them to become thoughtful and capable devs.

And the pressure is understandable. The founders were probably the core creatives who started the company but then they also need to scale and run a big company. So they become the bottleneck on business and design.

There’s a balance to be struck. Big projects need big planning, or you get wasted development time. The infrastructure for 5, 15, and 50+ people is very different. I’m wondering if they ever received all that money, or if they just scaled too early and skipped the small team skunkworks phase.

I hate when the suggestions in Gmail just change my voice without improving clarity. What I wrote was just as clear as the suggestion, but the suggestion is devoid of any character or individuality. They become more of a nuisance than an aid.

I still feel bad for the spun out studios because they’ll likely need to conduct their own furloughs/layoffs while they seek project funding or acquisition. That kind of thing is heartbreaking. GDC 2025, I hugged a sobbing CEO who lost his biggest client and had to do layoffs almost immediately.
