Wild-born kittens are doing well 🧡 The littluns stay with their mum for four to six months before dispersing to find territories of their own. Unlike their parents, kittens cannot be fitted with GPS-radio collars, so the team rely on trail cameras and public sightings to keep track of them 🐾

A wildcat’s stripes are unique, like fingerprints, even as kittens 🐾 Although a wildcat's markings change as it matures, key traits tend to remain consistent. This helps the team identify kittens, born to released wildcat females, that reappear on the trail cameras as dispersed juveniles 📸

1/4 Wildcat recovery in Scotland would not be possible without the support and contributions of the UK conservation breeding programme ✨ As hybridisation (interbreeding with domestic cats) began escalating in the 1970s, wildcats in captivity were protected from the threats facing those in the wild.

1/2 A little lesson in camouflage… 🫥 A wildcat’s brown fur and dark stripes make spotting them in thick vegetation very tricky. Their ability to ‘disappear’ is helpful when they’re hunting and can protect kittens from potential predation 🐾 But this only works if they stay still!

However, given the scale of the wildfire, we won't be able to understand the impact it may have had for several weeks, if not months.
150
Saving Wildcats @saveourwildcats.bsky.social · 31/07/2026
The Saving Wildcats team appreciate the ongoing concern for the newly establishing population of wildcats. Although wildfires are a significant risk for wildlife, it is likely that if any wildcats had been in the immediate vicinity of the fire, they would have moved away.
140
Saving Wildcats @saveourwildcats.bsky.social · 31/07/2026
The fire is still an ongoing situation, and it will take time to understand the full impact that this event has had on the landscape, and the wildlife that depends on it, including Scotland’s wildcats.
