Blackpool Village exists because of the River Bride - it is a visual and audible reminder of Blackpool’s past. What an utter shame that it does not feature in Cork City Council’s vision of Blackpool’s future. Illustration from Blackpool Village Core Concept Design and Implementation Strategy. #cork

Over 1km of the River Bride has been culverted between Blackpool Village and the River Lee. This process started in the 1800s. The OPW (with the support of Cork City Council) plan to extend this dead zone a further 350m up through Blackpool Village and the Orchard Court estate. #cork

An otter swims right by me as I waded the River Bride in Blackpool this morning. I was so caught by surprise that I could not get my phone camera working. The OPW and Cork City Council plan to bury this entire stretch of river underground. Jack Chambers gave it the go ahead. #cork

Galway councillor promises no more projects to make walking and cycling safer
-- "I’m happy with my position" councillor says when challenged by a local advocate. A Galway councillor, Cllr Shane Forde (Fine Gael), has vowed to block any future project to make roads safer for pedestrians and cyclists while he's still on the council. This morning he posted a photo of the September traffic on Castlepark Road on Facebook, and said: "This is the direct result of multiple traffic lights on the new scheme and the taking away of the slip lane at ATU.

I cannot emphasise enough how this "crisis in government" is not about any budget or policy decisions. It's about who gets to post first on Facebook about the funding announcement to redo the toilets in a dressing room — to make out your local TD had a hand in it. Peak Fianna Fáil/Fine Gael.

It depends. You can see them on the River Lee during the day often but will almost never see them during the day on the small tributary of the Lee - The River Bride. Camera trap footage would suggest that they are most active between 10pm and 6am on this tributary.

It’s a general perception. Perhaps Cork City otters are habituated to human presence. They do not appear overly flighty for the most part as long as they are left alone and given space.

Although it is generally accepted that otters are nocturnal creatures, no one has told Cork City otters this fact. Perhaps they know and don't care for it. This was at lunchtime on a bright Wednesday afternoon. He spent around 25 minutes entertaining a small crowd that had stopped to watch. #cork

Fast-tracking means taking short cuts. The Blackpool scheme was separated from the Lower Lee Flood Scheme in order to fast track it. This was eleven years ago. #cork

Acorn the otter heading upstream on the River Lee in Cork City this afternoon. Watch until the end for 'doggy paddle'. Distinctive marks can help identify individual otters. Acorn is easily identifiable by the 'acorn' ish shaped scar on his nose. He has been places you would not believe. #cork
