Marking the first day of the Pujo season with Satyajit Ray at the Cinematheque, and a very French dinner: tradition (bien cuite) avec pâte de campagne aux noisettes du sud ouest, verre de Bordeaux, et breton fraise.

"Whose deviation from the standard is art, and whose is error?" Super happy about the Carson win but I discussed in this essay last year the double standards of who gets accepted into the canon of unconventionality and who doesn't. wordswithoutborders.org/read/article...

“When an ecstatic is asked the question, What is it that love dares the self to do? she will answer: Love dares the self to leave itself behind, to enter into poverty.” —Anne Carson, from “Decreation”

In grad school I studied Decreation with Anne Carson before she wrote the book. When I told her I got the Princeton job (near the steps of Angell Hall) she said, rightly: “they’ll suck you dry and throw you in the river” with her amused almost smile & sparkle eyes. She was so right. Always is.

Learnt on Twitter that Princeton denied tenure to Anne Carson back in 1987.

Anne Carson. Yes. Just absolutely, yes.
THE PARIS REVIEW

INTERVIEWER
In the writing world, particularly in and around M.F.A. programs, there's a lot of discussion around things like "character" and "perspective," the mechanics of narrative. Do you think about
"craft" in these terms?

CARSON
Never. I don't think about it. I think people should just quit that stuff. Just think about something and follow it down to where it gets true.

Anne Carson is a writer and professor of classics and literature. Also: just one of the best poets writing in the English language today. If you are not reading her, you are really missing out. Her new poem is out today on @lrb.co.uk:

"To put the question more pungently, what is erotic about alphabetization?" - Anne Carson, in 'Eros the Bittersweet', a reworking of her 1981 doctoral thesis titled Odi et Amo Ergo Sum ("I Hate and I Love, Therefore I Am").

Bought a second hand edition of this book on the French journal L’Illustration and it came with these lavender coloured notes and passages highlighted with pencil. Long live the second hand.

It’s US publication day for my memoir Home IS Where We Start: Growing Up In The Fallout Of A Utopian Dream. It was a 6-page feature in The Guardian. You can read the excerpts and then get your copy of the book here: bookshop.org/p/books/ho…www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle...om

I was raised in a utopian commune where children ran wild. Only years later did I realise how much danger came with that freedom
It was all I knew: a radical, hippy, back‑to‑nature fantasy where children and adults were meant to be equals. But was it as idyllic as it seemed?

Love this photograph of my grandmother, taken in Calcutta suburbs sometime around 1945-46, just before India’s independence. In the photograph, she is waiting for a car to go to the theatre.
