This is what seems to be happening with the Clayface movie - still set in some form of DC's Gotham, but with a different focus and body horror instead of superhero/detective

I'm not sure it's new technologies that I'm sceptical about, more late-stage capitalism, but I recognise they've become heavily entwined in the last 25 years

I get what you mean, I'm sure this thread falls foul of this other recent skeet of Zach's, but I don't get how you can have the experience below and decide to use your public platform to be more frustrated about how people criticise AI than about the product itself

Vic "Loxley" Collins @satyricorner.live · 30/09/2026
It can build a Frankenstein-esque amalgamation of previous ideas, but it can't reflect on previous experience to decide to do something novel or unique, because novel or unique are, by definition, statistically unlikely
030
Vic "Loxley" Collins @satyricorner.live · 30/09/2026
LLMs don't understand that experience, because they don't even understand individual words, it's just using a most-probable next token based on previous tokens Beneath the software layers it's not all that different from 10,000 monkeys on 10,000 typewriters

I conceded in my thread that humans are capable of creating art that's the equivalent of slop, people phone shit in, or bold ideas are watered down by committee But you're right, the wider context matters; even if someone rushes a job, they still practiced and maintained the skill
120
Vic "Loxley" Collins @satyricorner.live · 30/09/2026
Ultimately, I understand the point OP is making, if the art is of equal/mid level quality, does it matter what created it My counter argument would be that between AI and a human, only one is going to be able to use that "mid" creation to have artistic innovation in the future
030
Vic "Loxley" Collins @satyricorner.live · 30/09/2026
AI meanwhile, has a limited context window, which doesn't really benefit the iterative nature of art, nor the sprawling amounts of information an artist can gather and develop, which informs the work while never being written down or imagined - and this is before accounting for hallucinations

Vic "Loxley" Collins @satyricorner.live · 30/09/2026
I know this reading is not intended, but Wodehouse didn't crack out "the three greatest comic novels" at the outset of his career and then toss off "generic Edwardian light comedy" for his subsequent 70 books Artists evolve over time, they iterate, revisit and build on ideas
120
Vic "Loxley" Collins @satyricorner.live · 30/09/2026
Zach goes on from here to say that most artists, even the greats, are mid (subjective), but I think he fails to acknowledge that someone's "mid" art is practice and progression, even if you're phoning something in to make sure you can have a roof over your head

I've got thick 3B hair, so speak from experience Honestly, even just using the argan oil brushed through with a thick tooth comb before one of your other products may improve your experience Failing that, maybe find a local salon that specialises in BAME hair and ask them for recommendations?

It probably helps that Riquetti Gardens puts me in mind of Alton Towers, which is built in and around the ruins and gardens of a stately home. Maybe it means this blend doesn't seem quite as unusual to folks in the UK.

I've been playing Two Point Museum a lot, and expanding the concept into aquariums, zoos and theme parks is a stretch BUT putting them all in the same game means you can blend all these interconnected themes in one museum! A monorail around your safari park, a ghost train next to the actual ghosts!

I remain very skeptical about AI, but I recently learned about OLMo (Open Language Model) from @ai2.bsky.social, which seems to avoid a lot of my biggest objections The training data for most models is derived from human work that has been unethically sourced and deliberately obscured

Let's talk a bit about what LLMs - the specific AI technology everyone is talking about as "AI" - actually be useful for, to debunk the "unprincipled hater" allegations. LLMs are, essentially, predictive models of human language, and they can do things that involve predicting human language.

I'm not intending to use any AI, but I have to concede that the training and distribution of OLMo adds some nuance to my stance and I'm curious to know what other people think Overall, I think the advice of @ethical-consumer.bsky.social remains appropriate

What to look for when choosing an AI tool:

• Start with less AI. Before using an AI tool, ask whether you need one at all. A search engine (see separate forthcoming guide), library database, calculator, or colleague may be safer, more accurate and less resource intensive.

• Use AI deliberately. Treat prompts like a small act of consumption. Avoid using AI for throwaway tasks, especially image generation, long conversations, or anything involving sensitive, legal, or financial information.

• Look beyond convenience. Look for small providers and prioritise companies that avoid military contracts and minimise data retention. A tool that is slightly less polished may be the better ethical choice if it means you can avoid Big Tech.

There are still issues: hallucinations will still occur and this model doesn't address social issues of AI, such as AI psychosis, individual isolation, validating erroneous beliefs, and Nor does it prevent the atrophying of skills reported by some software developers when used as a coding tool

On the subject of corporate products, this is FOSS (Free and Open Source Software), and the documentation promises "Unrestricted commercial use without hidden restrictions" across the models. No tokens to purchase, no licenses, no oligarch is getting richer off this LLM

On top of this, as an open source model, OLMo is intended to run locally or with a cloud deployment, so would not cause the environmental or privacy concerns nor tech shortages of the major corporate models This does address one of my major objections to local models I made six months ago
110
Vic "Loxley" Collins @satyricorner.live · 19/09/2026
By comparison, OLMo's training data is publicly visible. That still doesn't necessarily mean they're not scraping information without consent, but it does make it harder to hide it Research by Rachel Hong, et al. found OLMo derived some training data from other datasets, so it's not entirely clear
