I'm not intending to use any AI, but I have to concede that the training and distribution of OLMo adds some nuance to my stance and I'm curious to know what other people think Overall, I think the advice of @ethical-consumer.bsky.social remains appropriate

What to look for when choosing an AI tool:

• Start with less AI. Before using an AI tool, ask whether you need one at all. A search engine (see separate forthcoming guide), library database, calculator, or colleague may be safer, more accurate and less resource intensive.

• Use AI deliberately. Treat prompts like a small act of consumption. Avoid using AI for throwaway tasks, especially image generation, long conversations, or anything involving sensitive, legal, or financial information.

• Look beyond convenience. Look for small providers and prioritise companies that avoid military contracts and minimise data retention. A tool that is slightly less polished may be the better ethical choice if it means you can avoid Big Tech.

Watching a kids movie in the cinema, so I just learned about Armoursaurs, aka we have Power Rangers at home I'd be less dismissive, but when your T-Rex is red and your triceratops is blue comparisons will be made...

Interesting idea, but just to point out that the comparison there is British political parties compared to individual American politicians Would be interested to see you throw these into the mix as well
Logos for American political parties
Green Party (a green globe haloed by seed or flower petals)
Constitution Party (an blue eagle underneath the party name, surrounded by 17 blue stars and a red ring)
Republicans (simple silhouette of an elephant facing right, the lower part is red the upper part is blue with 3 white 5 pointed stars, pointing down)
Democrats (a silhouette of a donkey facing left, coloured identically to the Republican logo, but with 4 stars pointing up)
Libertarians (a blue Statue of Liberty above the party name and foundation year, 1971 on a gold circle embossed with gold stars, surrounded by two blue circles)

I'm increasingly wondering if the books and coaching strategies that promise "ADHD is a superpower" are a product of survivorship bias, like bullet holes in returning fighter planes
"Look where the bullets are not"
A diagram of a WW2 era, two propeller fighter plane, with red bullet holes marks, indicating where planes returning from combat had received damage

This was used to identify where to add additional protection from gunfire, originally suggesting that the areas marked received more gunfire. However, the realisation was these were places planes received gun fire and survived, whereas receiving gun fire in the blank areas would be fatal

They're taking their ideas from Douglas Adams' satire now...
“The electric monk was a labour-saving device, like a dishwasher or a video recorder. Dishwashers washed tedious dishes for you, thus saving you the bother of washing them yourself, video recorders watched tedious television for you, thus saving you the bother of looking at it yourself; electric monks believed things for you, thus saving you what was becoming an increasingly onerous task, that of believing all the things the world expected you to believe.”

I absolutely agree, that is a highly specialised LLM trained with specific data One of my favourite essays on AI points out that anyone who needed to use LLMs was already using LLMs, and the current push really is just attempting to generalise something with a narrow use case
II. But We Need AI To Remain Comp-

Sweet merciful Jesus, stop talking. Unless you are one of a tiny handful of businesses who know exactly what they're going to use AI for, you do not need AI for anything - or rather, you do not need to do anything to reap the benefits. Artificial intelligence, as it exists and is useful now, is probably already baked into your businesses software supply chain.

I genuinely thought this was advertising a tie-in for the @chucktingle.bsky.social RPG
Cover for "The Tingleverse: The Official Chuck Tingle Role-Playing Game" By Chuck Tingle.

The title is written in a Wild West-style font on a wooden sign. The background appears to be a mountain behind a lake, surrounded by pine trees, at sunset.

Beneath the sign is a shirtless dinosaur facing the viewer with defined muscles, wearing a cowboy hat, and jeans with chaps.

To the left and behind the dinosaur is a sasquatch looking off panel, to the right and behind is an elf carrying a bow, wearing an open backed top and a quiver of arrows.

Rising from beneath the group are three black tentacles.

The authors name is written jauntily across the crotch of the cowboy dinosaur, in a way that is probably coincidental, but feels relevant after staring at this image for ten minutes writing alt-text.

The author doesn't actually talk about the wider modern corporate surge on AI, just a few niche cases that predate the current rush. I'm reminded of the quote below, from the seminal work on AI: "I Will Fucking Piledrive You If You Mention AI Again" (Source ludic.mataroa.blog/blog/i-will-...)

Your managed security provider is probably using some algorithms baked up in a lab software to detect anomalous traffic, and here's a secret, they didn't do much AI work either, they bought software from the tiny sector of the market that actually does need to do employ data scientists. I know you want to be the next Steve Jobs, and this requires you to get on stages and talk about your innovative prowess, but none of this will allow you to pull off a turtle neck, and even if it did, you would need to replace your sweaters with fullplate to survive my onslaught.

But that relies on availability, which can vary. I found the below Reddit response from a librarian who purchases TTRPGs for their library I'll briefly acknowledge piracy, but it still requires AWARENESS of games to try out AND it's going to hit small publishers far more than giants like WOTC 6/10
A screen shot of a reddit response
coreypress • 2y ago
I'm a librarian and I buy RPGs for my library. So I know library RPG collection exist, they just vary from library to library.

It's tricky to balance the cost vs use. I can stock D&D pretty easily, but when it comes to smaller games (ie, most of them), it's hard to justify the cost/shelf space if they just end up sitting there (not helped by games that require custom dice). I try to base some of my smaller game purchases on ongoing programming to help justify them come budget season.

One thing you can try is talking to your library interlibrary loan department. They can search libraries through out the (I'm assuming you're in the) US and order materials from them for you. It might take awhile to get to you and may cost a small fee (your library system depending), but they'll get the thing for you.

A pile of five small, round, individual portions of bread baked in a batch, so that they have a thin crust and a notable semi-circular tear in the sides where they previously connected to each other

Due to a lot of regional variation in what people call them, arguments about the "correct" name for this food have become a meme in the UK, to the point that major data and analytics group YouGov have conducted surveys, identifying at least 5 common and 3 less common names in use

Just over 24 hours until the big charity bike ride and the weather's looking so bad the event might be cancelled... As long as the ride is deemed safe, I'll be going, but it does look like the weather is gonna suck Toss a coin to your rider? www.justgiving.com/page/satyric...
Event contingency
While we are planning for the event to go ahead, the forecast continues to change, and we must be prepared for all possibilities. If conditions are deemed unsafe for riders, volunteers, or support crews, we may be forced to make a last-minute decision to cancel the event. This could be necessary if high winds, heavy rain, or other factors make the route too hazardous.
